About this title: A new teaching edition of "Twenty Years at Hull-House," this volume is an ideal way to introduce students to one of America's most famous women and an early leader of the Progressive movement. Jane Addams's original text has been reduced by about 35 percent, making it more accessible to undergraduates while maintaining the integrity of the original work. "This is a hard book to rate. I'm reading it for research, and it's very densely written. I think because Addams wrote it while she was still deep in the middle of running Hull House, she refers to many things that were probably common/understood at the time, but which I just don't know about. I had to do a lot of backtracking and rereading of paras & sentences.
On the other hand, I truly enjoyed "getting to know" Addams as a person, seeing glimpses of the philosophy and drive that moved her to do what she did and smiling at her own humor about some of her naivete and early assumptions. Her belief in what she was doing is so strong it just jumps off the page; admiration and just plain liking are my feelings after finishing."
