"Lears argues that the period between the end of the Civil War and WWI set up the American identity of the modern age that is still with us today. Well, how could it not? Any period over a half century long better have some impact on society. But Lears runs the gauntlet to show how everything about American life shifted; from where we lived to how we lived. That impact moved the public mood from culture to politics and that in turn affected how our leaders reacted to major events.
He's not shy about sharing his personal opinion on people and events. I didn't mind too much. He comes from the left on some union, populism, and social issues, and I usually agree. It's still jarring to hear a historian state his thoughts so bluntly without laying out some proof immediately before or after.
He also weaves a complex web and bounces all over the place in time, choosing to be more faithful to the themes his chapters lay out. It makes each chapter a solid argument but can be confusing while tracking down people and events. It's a massive tome but definitively shows how the nineteenth century American morphed into the twentieth century one."
"Interesting subject potential; the book overall was not as engrossing as I had hoped. The narrative digresses quite a bit (enough to be distracting) and more time is given to theoretical supposition rather than specific examples. Maybe the subject was to vast to cover in one book."
"Lears is a fantastic writer. Indeed, the book's organization by topic and not merely chronologically is an interesting adaptation to the normal history book. His frame of the Progressive Era as a struggling for rebirth and regeneration (through moral reform, physical strength, the rhetoric of empire) is interesting, but all in all, I don't think I learned anything I didn't already know."
