"Even though I was at a loss after skipping the second book (which, after this, doesn't seem that much of a loss after all), I still managed to pick it up fairly quickly - but in the end, I was vastly disappointed. The transitioning of the chapters were so awkward they immediately resonated with me: one minute, they ended on suspense, and the next chapter delves into some situation about her Aunt Abby before rewinding back to where the sticky situation left us off at. Couldn't we have waited on the commentary? It just wasn't necessary.
Cammie became a such a downer now that she's fallen in love and immensely obsessed with Zach (whose mysteriousness equally rubbed me the wrong way). It was always about Zach: What was he doing here? Why wasn't he answering my questions? What about Boston? GET OVER IT! She wasn't the spunky protagonist I saw in the first book. She was still smart and witty, but she became one of those classic YA protagonists, always whining after some boy.
I should have liked the plot. I should have liked the adventures and the action-filled pages with our heroines throwing punches and narrowly escaping death. I should have liked the James Bond-esque scenarios. But I didn't. Instead, I thought it played out too long and too confusing that I wasn't sure who was throwing gadgets and who was on the receiving end. It just became a blur of motions and I was at a complete loss. The pacing of the plot then became so unbearable - as in, I didn't know WHAT the story was about anymore - that I finally just threw it aside."
"Cammie goes to some kind of presidential party with Macy when they are suddenly attacked! From then on, it's about trying to save Macy from whatever potential threat is out there.
I really did enjoy this one. There seems to be a lot more adventure scenes since the focus of this book isn't about boys anymore. Although, Zach and Preston, a new character, make a few appearances in this.
There were moments where I thought Cammie was very reckless, especially when you find out about the twist at the end.
Zach was a nice surprise to find whenever Cammie decided to venture out. I thought for a while that he could be the potential threat, but that would totally destroy the purpose of the second book.
I also thought Preston could've been it too, since it's always the quiet ones you suspect (lol), but listening to the end, makes me think otherwise.
I can't wait to read/listen to the next book.
---
A note about the audio author: Pretty good. She could do really good technology-like voices, but she was terrible at about everything else, especially the southern accent."
"Cammie and Macey (both students at the prestigious Gallagher Academy for Exceptional Young Women, i.e. Spy School) and Preston (son of a prominent politician) are attacked on a rooftop during a political convention, and they barely escape with their lives. Macey is particularly affected by the experience, withdrawing into herself and become a shadow of the force of nature she normally is. Almost everyone thinks that the foiled kidnapping attempt was perpetrated by enemies of her parents (her dad is running for office), and they have a lot of potential enemies, so it's hard to pin it on any one group. Cammie, however, begins to analyze what happened that day and discovers (after weeks and weeks of searching) that the group behind it all is really seeking to strike back at the Gallagher Academy through Macey. When Cammie herself is targeted, however, she has to revise her analysis yet again.
This is the 3rd book in the Gallagher Girls series. I somehow missed the 2nd. There was a lot more spy action in this installment, which I thought was good - all of the focus on Cammie's feelings for Josh in the first book kind of let me down. That's not to say that there was no leading man. There was a Zach (presumably we meet and learn all about him in the 2nd book) who materialized over and over again, but his intentions were never clear. Is he trying to protect the girls? Does he still have feelings for Cammie? They have several close calls where Cammie thinks Zach is going to kiss her, but it never materializes, and readers are left wondering if he's the good guy or the bad guy at the end of the book. I can't decide if I want to know more about the relationship or not (i.e. whether to read the 2nd book now that I've already read the 3rd). These are like James Bond meets the Princess Diaries - lots of action, but also this goofy, awkward, teenage girl vibe...like, deadly, but with classes and hormones. Fun stuff for the most part."
"I've been procrastinating doing this review for few days now... It isn't because it was a bad book, quite the contrary actually! I loved it! It is the perfect blend of boarding school drama, spies, romance, and mystery! It is just difficult to write a review for this book without saying: "Go read the first two!" I'd Tell You I Love You, But Then I'd Have to Kill You and Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy are both amazing books, but I think that this may have been my favorite one so far!
Cammie's aunt is a present throughout this installment of the series. Not only was she a pretty awesome character, I welcomed the knowledge and glimpses she gave the reader into Cammie's family and past. I feel like we will find out even more about that in the next book.
Speaking of the next book - I need to know what happens with Cammie and the guy in her life! I can't even give a name because if you haven't read book one and two, I don't want to ruin it for you! I'm totally in love with their love story. It is important to point out at this point that I am pretty much obsessed with the show Alias - so obsessed that I own all 5 seasons and have watched them multiple times. I may have cried when I watched the last episode... :S Ally Carter's Gallagher Girls books are basically Alias for a little bit younger crowd. Vaughn and Sydney from Alias? I'm as obsessed with Cammie and her love interest as I was with Vaughn and Sydney. There is just so much TENSION!
Go out and read the Gallagher Girls books - they are some of my absolute favorite books! There is another book coming, but I haven't the slightest clue when (which drives me crazy because Ally Carter leaves you with questions and wanting more)! I do know that Ally is writing a new series though. The first book is called Heist Society and comes out February 2010 from Hyperion."
