"With Nora Roberts' books, it's the journey not the destination because the ending is never in doubt. Getting there is a lot of fun in this first of four books about four women who co-own a wedding planning business. Fast friends from childhood, these four women help the dream event of other women come true with sophistication and glamour.
This book tells the story of Mackenzie, the wedding photographer of talent who captures special moments with beauty and grace. She herself does not seek love at all. Raised by a narcisstic mother who goes from one man to another without regard for her children, Mac is not sure that longterm love exists, at least not for her.
Enter Carter Maguire whom she knew from high school, now a professor turned high school English teacher. His clumsy and endearing ways along with his obvious love for her, starts to win her over. Her fear and skittishness threatens to kill their love.
A good satisfying love story interspersed with wedding stories from comical to sweeet."
"A good, fun book, and an enjoyable, easy read. The main problem I had with the story was the lack of conflict. Conflict is what drives the story and pulls us in as readers. For Mac, the heroine, her main struggle is her mother - a self-centered, spoiled woman - and being unable to stand up to her and simply say, 'no.' Her history and background with her mother is the basis for Mac's fear about relationships and believing marriage and love is something long-term and lasting. Besides this, however, there's not a whole lot driving her.
The idea of Vows, a bridal service the four friends have created and run together, is great and we get a sneak peek at all the different facets (and drama) of weddings. But again, there's no real conflict. The friends fight and quickly make up. Their business doesn't struggle over a particular bride or losing a big job. They win. All the time.
The same is true for the hero, Carter. We know he's not going anywhere. He'll stand there and wait for Mac to fight through her internal conflicts because he loves her. We never fear, as readers, that these two wonderful people won't work out.
Again, it's a fun read but I was never pulled in. I feel like I never had the chance to see who these characters are and the traits at their core. In truth, who someone truly is only comes out in those moments of crisis and when they're forced to make difficult choices - that's when we learn who they are.
I'll read the next book in the series and see if Ms. Roberts ups the tension a bit, if not I'll probably pass and focus on her suspense/thrillers."
"Hooray! Roberts is back to doing what (I think) she does best--clean, fun, contemporary romance featuring close friendships and believable heroes.
This first entry into her new series lays the groundwork -- 4 best friends who work together running a business where they plan and execute weddings. Photographer Mac Elliot loves her friends, but her family is another matter. Her dad disappeared when she was small, and her controlling mother has since gone through several husbands and boyfriends. So while she enjoys photographing brides in their happy-ever-after moments, she doesn't believe in those moments for herself.
Until, that is, she meets local teacher Carter Maguire...
Personally, I think Roberts is a successful author because of the way she showcases and emphasizes friendships between women. The romance aspect is almost secondary to the fantasy of having close friends to work with, share life with, and lean on for support. In "Vision," the friends argue and make up, live separately but get together for movie nights... truly an idealized life."
"I've read several Nora Roberts and this is the best one so far. She always draws her characters so well, you can actually see them and what they do. Mackenzie and her three best friends own and operate a wedding planning business. Mackenzie(Mac) does the photography, Emma, the flowers, Laurel the cakes and the whole of the enterprise is overseen by Parker. All of them have been friends since childhood and they love each other and have each other's backs. The interactions between the four friends are funny, sarcastic and filled with little short-hand phrases and terms that long time friends use with each other. Mac doesn't believe in happily ever after. Her mother is a serial-marrier after her dad left when she was four. Carter Maguire is a soft-spoken English teacher, whom Mac knew from a distance in high school when he had a crush on her that she never knew. Carter is one of the best heroes I've come across. He proves that smart is sexy as he proudly waves his nerd flag. He is so open and honest with his feelings. How can Mac not fall for him? I'd recommend this for anyone who loves wonderfully told romantic stories. This is Roberts at her best. Can't wait for the next book in this series.
