"I'm very fond of the Bloomsbury group period so love biographies and any representation of the group members. Virginia, is, of course Virginia Woolf, and Vanessa is her sister Vanessa Bell. Using vignettes portrayed from Vanessa's point of view, the author explores their close but competitive relationship. Their bohemian lives seem generally unhappy but they both have a strong drive toward expressing their individual creativity that matters more than anything else including husbands and children."
"I enjoyed this book, but I read it after working on Woolf for my dissertation research. I was a little surprised at what seemed to me the high degree of familiarity Sellers expected her readers to have with Virginia and Vanessa's lives, and I wondered if it was really accessible to the "casual reader." I might be just projecting, though. I was touched by the last few chapters of the book in particular--I already loved Vanessa from reading Woolf's letters and bio, and the way Sellers portrayed her tension as European politics and her group's idealism hit closer and closer to home was fascinating and (to me) realistic."
