"Alternating viewpoint chapters start a little slow and plodding but pick up steam - set among the Northern Ontario Cree Indians of Canada, including one who moves to NY to model and her sister who follows her. But the heart of the book is their Uncle, living off the land and trying to kick booze and all are trying to come together and make it in this modern world. The characters were still rattling around in my head today and I missed their voices as soon as I finished. Plus, there's a Cowichan sweater on the cover. It doesn't get more Canadian than that."
"Utterly brilliant in every way. Just when I was despairing over my loss of faith in Ondaatje's and Urquhart's latest novels, here is Joseph Boyden who can truly write. His voice is not present in his novels, in other words, he doesn't need to inject himself into his work, in the hopes of making us think..."ooooh, he's so intelligent and clever." He writes engrossing stories, with extremely well-developed characters, and you don't have to wade through metaphors or a writing style that is poetic but too hard to decipher. His writing delivers real pleasure. I'm happy to find an author who has such talent."
"Through Black Spruce is a follow up to Joseph Boyden's earlier book "The Three Day Road". It won the Giller Prize in Canada. The characters in this book are descendants of the characters in the earlier book. Though I didn't enjoy "Through Black Spruce" as much as I did "The Three Day Road" nevertheless it is a good book. Once again in "Through Black Spruce" we see the effects of trauma the Native People of Canada have suffered following their treatment in the hands of the settlers to Canada. There are references to the residential schools, which changed the names of the native children, changed their religion, separated them from their parents and way of life and rendered them forever misfits. The effects of the settlers' attempt to "civilize" the native Canadian are felt to this day when we read of alcohol and drug abuse among native children, the high incidence of violence in native communities and a high suicide rate among native youngsters. We see the characters of this book struggle through the same challenges while they try to retain a traditional way of life. The story also deals with family loyalties and family feuds. Though the two main character of the book Will Bird and Annie Bird are flawed and certainly bring a lot of pain down upon themselves, the reader sympathizes with them because they are likeable. What is most interesting is the method in which the story unfolds. Will Bird and his niece Annie are the narrators of alternate chapters, each telling their own story till finally the stories merge. I recommend the book for its beautiful prose and as a revelation of life in the native communities of northern Canada. As expected, the geography of northern Ontario is a character in the book."
"I would have read this book anyway even if it was not a choice of my Book Cllub because I loved Three Day Road which I have recommended countless times. Although I continued to love Boyden's style and his First Nations theme with his depictions of Reserve life in all its humour and darkness I didn't care for this book as much. I think it was the placing of much of the story in New York and Annie's experiences there. I can see his aim in looking at how the "uniqueness" of being aboriginal can be exploited and also what happens to many aboriginals who leave the Reserve for the opportunites of urban life, but for me it was a bit of overkill and rambled a bit. Having said that I loved most of the characters especially the secondary ones on the Reserve."
