About this title: Book Three begins as Sophie and Josh Newman show every sign of being the twins of prophecy, and Flamel vows to protect them from the Dark Elders. But he must find an Elder who can teach the siblings the third elemental magic--Water Magic. The only Elder who can do that is Gilgamesh--and he is quite, quite insane.

"#3 'Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel' YA fantasy series. This book picks up immediately where the second one left off, with Sophie and Josh Newman, fifteen-year-old twins (now known to the 'The Twins of Legend') with the alchemist Nicholas Flamel battling against the forces of evil, which are spearheaded by the noted magician, Dr. John Dee. Presently in London, Dee continues to send various foes against them, most drawn from the pages of history and/or mythology.
This book is very fast-paced, hurtling along from one near-disaster to another with little time for piecing together of any puzzles in between. Meanwhile, on Alcatraz Island, Flamel's wife Peronelle, a sorceress of some note, has to deal with various monsters sent by Niccolo Machiavelli, another of the evil crew, who is looking to settle an old debt with her. The book leaves no doubt that there will be more in the series as it seemed like nothing more than an action-packed interlude on the way to a hopefully somewhat meatier conclusion. (I've no idea how many books are planned in this series.)
I enjoyed the book, although the reader is not my favorite. We learned a few things along the way, but most of this was action and not much introspection or puzzle-solving and not a lot of character development. My favorite character in this series, Scatatch, an ancient Celtic warrior goddess (who is now a vegetarian vampire!) was very short on exposure in this book--hoping to see more of her again next time."
"spoiler alert ** This author is incredibly knowledgeable about mythology and folklore. It's amazing how he weaves in history and myth. This book continues the Flamel's desire to have the twins learn all the elemental magics, avoid being captured (especially by Dee) and stop the Dark Elders from coming back. I love that William Shakespeare is an immortal and a very entertaining character. The end of this book left me hanging- of course. Are the twins swords or kids? I hope the next book comes out quickly; I hate waiting when I'm into a series."
"Wow. That was... oh my gosh just amazing. I was NOT at ALL dissapointed with that book. Well, maybe a tad, but otherwise it was GREAT! Exciting, emotional, and fun to read! I was scared a few times, though. I'm so worried about Scatty and Joan! I really hope they can get back. Also, I think Josh has replaced Scatty as my favorite character. He was so brave and funny! I can't wait to see him in the movie. Sophie was awesome, as usual. Her funny, bossy self. I'm SO glad that the Crow Goddess is good now! That's SO freakin' awesome! Also, Billy the Kid was really cool! Different from I imagined, though. I can't wait to read more about him in the future books. (Even if he was bad) And finally, Dee. I am shocked and amazed... I wonder what he'll do with his new sword. I'm scared to really find out...
The Sorceress By Michael Scott Pub. Date: May 2009 5 out of 5 stars PG-13 - Violence Recommended
Nicholas Flamel was able to get the twins, Josh and Sophie, out of Paris, France, but it seems only to bring them to an even more dangerous place, London. In a city that Dee and the Dark Elders completely control, every corner hides a person that may finally be able to capture them, or worse... kill them. They are not helpless though, with Sophie already trained in two elemental magics, Nick's knowledge, and Josh's sword, but any presence of their auras will alert everyone in the city to their location. Even if the twins survive the streets of London, they may not survive the encounter with the Water magic teacher. For Nicholas has been hiding the fact from them that this man is completely and utterly insane...
The Sorceress isn't only an action-adventure fantasy for teen boys, but also a thrilling, mysterious ride for all ages and genders.
Not only is The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series exciting, but also great books to use in the classroom. Many characters are based on historical figures. You could easily use these books as interest builders for history class. Even Science, Math, and Physics classes could be aided in teaching students by these books. The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series uses Intelligent Fighting tactics. The characters aren't just bashing the bad guys on the head with hammers, but using physics, gravity, common sense, distance estimation, probabilities, erosion, and more to take out the bad guys. These are all things that are taught in school, but not always met with interest from students. These books could turn that around!
A fourth of all the sentences started with either he, she, or they. Though that is not a very sophisticated writing technic, it doesn't impinge my love of the books at all
The Sorceress kept me on my tiptoes the whole time. Each chapter had a different cliffhanger, so it was impossible to stop reading! Someone should really add an advertisement page after each chapter, because seriously, I was waiting for the commercials to begin. Also, every character, be them minor, major, hero, or villian, had to face their different dilemmas in their own narrated chapters. I never knew who would be in the next chapter, or when we would get back to a different one. Warning, you will not be able to put this book down!
