"After the first hundred pages I was ready to throw the book down and type in my GoodReads evaluation, which would have been, "This book offends every single one of my sensibilities."
I'm glad I finished the book. Although I believe it continues to offend about 45% of my sensibilities, mostly those re: politics and justice, specifically my unease about simplistic retributive vigilantism and absolute ideas about evil, I found myself totally riveted after page 101 and flipping pages like my life depended on it. A sensationalistic sex-crime page-turner - who can argue with that??
I was initially hesitant about the 165 RMB asking price at Hongqiao Airport (that's 54 jian bings!) and considered buying the 110 RMB Life of Oscar Wao instead, but I'm glad I chose this one. It made the last three of my thirteen hours at the airport pass by very quickly.
S chastised me after I told her this story and said, "That's why you should always finish the book before rating it, Men D." How I love dear S, wise dear, dear S."
"The Scarecrow is the tightly written story of reporter Jack McEvoy and FBI Special Agent Rachel Walling searching for a new serial killer, who they call the UnSub, for Unknown Subject. For Jack, finishing out his last two weeks at the Los Angeles Times before being downsized, it could be the second amazing story of his career. What better way to go out than on a high note? When he calls his former lover, Rachel, whom he hasn't seen in ten years looking for information, her sixth sense tells her that something is amiss and she jumps in to his investigation with both feet. Meanwhile, the reader knows who the UnSub is. The Scarecrow has gotten his moniker by being able to scare off any hackers or explorers who visit the Farm of data storage computers he oversees. Jack and Rachel's investigation takes them from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and on to Arizona. Besides being an exciting thriller, The Scarecrow tackles two current issues we hear about daily, privacy of our data, and the economic crisis. Jack is being downsized with 99 other Times employees as more people are turning to the Internet and television for their news. The Scarecrow uses his computer skills to find his victims and to disrupt the investigation, trying to cut off Jack's resources, and setting up others for his crimes."
"THE SCARECROW is a two-fold story. The first part takes us into the mind and modus opperandi of a serial killer, while the second takes us into the personal and professional life of Jack McEvoy, crime reporter for the L.A. Times, and the impending demise of not only his job but newspaper business as we know it. The culprit aiding and abetting in both instances is the internet.
Michael Connelly's story reads like it was taken from the nightly news report. The killer identifies and tracks his victims utilizing the personal information that everyone seems to be so eager to share with their faceless "friends" out there in cyper-space. Newspaper writers are losing their jobs because this same internet can bring the news into our homes faster and can utilize less expensive novice writers straight out of journalism school to produce the copy. Jack has been given his pink slip (RIF) by the Times, has two weeks to train his replacement before he hits the bricks, and has received an irate call from a woman stating that her "boy" has been accused for a murder he didn't commit. While investigating her claim Jack and his novice trainee Angela accidently stumble upon a bigger and better story that puts both of their lives in jeopardy. Enter Jack's one time love, FBI profiler Rachel Walling. Now all the characters are in place and the story really starts rolling.
Connelly has taken some unoriginal basics, added his own particular brand of insight and commentary, then tweeked and twisted the story to give his readers a plotline filled with thrilling scenarios and great characters that will hook you and keep you reading into the wee small hours of the morning. Needless to say, I love Michael Connelly."
"Jack McEvoy is number 99. "The Los Angeles Times" is required to pair down the staff by 100 people and he seems to be the next to last cut. He's given two weeks so he can train his replacement, Angela Cook.
Just as he's heading back to his desk from getting the bad news, he gets a call. Wanda Sessums is Alonzo Winslow's grandmother. She tells Jack that his paper has the wrong info. They are saying that her grandson, "Lo" confesses to murder and he never did. Jack decides to check things out and thinks, what if he got one last great story, would that prove the paper was terminating the wrong person? Also, he considers that he may have time to write the book he always wanted to do.
Alonzo is accused of killing a stripper and when Jack checks his statement, all he said was that he saw the victim's purse in the car so he sole the car. When he looked in the trunk, he found the body of Denise Babbit.
Angela decides to look into files to see if there are similar cases. She's surprised to find another stripper, Sharon Oglevy, who was killed and found in the trunk of her car with the same marks on her as Denise.
The reader learns about something called The Farm, and a man named Carver. He is one of the killers. He's been following computer hits on the trunk murder search engine and wonders what threat Angela is to him. When he uses spyware, he sees Jack's emails to Angela and with the discovery of the second death, things are too close to him. He decides to stop Jack. He is adept with computers and gets card numbers for Jack's credit cards and then calls the card companies and fixes it so so they put a stop on them. He also erases Jack's messages to his boss and cancels a meeting Jack had at the prison with the man accused of killing Sharon Oglevy.
Feeling isolated and in need of a person to trust, Jack calls Rachel Walling, an FBI agent Jack had an affair with when they were working on the "Poet", case.
Rachel feels something is wrong and does some checking. With the info on Jack's credit cards, emails and the cancelled meeting at the prison, she feels he's being set up so flies to Vegas. She waits for Jack in his room, thereby spoiling the chance for a killer to terminate Jack. Then they travel back to Jack's home and find the body of Angela under Jack's bed. She knows she has foiled the set-up and the authorities begin an investigation.
With Rachel's FBI background, they are able to trace where the emails came from and find The Farm. She knows that one man went to Vegas to kill Jack, another killed Angela and there is a description of an older man so there must be a team of killers.
In the meanwhile, Carver has his own plans and must be stopped.
As usual, Michael Connelly writes a supurb story. The suspense mounts and the reader becomes entranced in the pace of the story. Jack and Rachel are good characters and I expect to see them working together in the future.
