"Elmore Leonard hasn't hit my shelf for a while. I used to enjoy his crooks who couldn't shoot straight. This latest installment on the society inhabited by the scofflaws twists and turns as each character remains self absorbed.
The story spins from the jail time shared by two men and the greed of a woman who comes between them when they are released. The resulting comedy of errors leaves a couple bodies and a drifting hero who has the money but no sense of purpose.
It is a good simulation of life in general, somewhat unresolved with casualties at the side of the road.
Leonard is a fine craftsman and his snappy dialogue and asides satisfies, despite lose ends and questionable motives. But ain't that life, lose ends, casualties and questionable motives?"
"Elmore Leonard brings back several of his best characters in this new caper novel. It helps if you've read his older novels, but if you haven't, it won't keep you from enjoying the story. This is not as compelling a mystery as some of his others, but it's still Leonard, so it's head and shoulders above anybody else in the field.
I just hope he sticks around for a long time, and keeps giving us more good stories."
"Out of Sight was one of my favorite Elmore Leonard novels (and a great movie despite having Jennifer Lopez in it) so I was really excited to hear that Jack Foley would be a character in this one along with a couple of other Leonard characters from other books, Dawn Navvaro from Riding the Rap and Cundo Rey from LaBrava.
Unfortunately, half of what made Out of Sight so fun was Karen Sisco and Jack's crazy romance, and with no Karen in this one, the whole book doesn't have the same zing. Dawn was a great ambiguous character in Riding the Rap, and she and Jack have good chemistry, but I couldn't help missing Karen.
Still, even after all the books I've read by him, I'm always amazed at Leonard's great dialogue and characters, and his amazing ability to write the crazy inner monologues that most people have running in their heads about what they should say or how they should act.
And you never know where an Elmore Leonard book is going. I've read interviews where he stated that he doesn't know what will happen when he starts one, and it's easy to believe since the plots almost never end up where you think they will. And you never know which characters you thought were 'good' end up 'bad' or vice versa.
Not his best, but there's no such thing as a bad Elmore Leonard book, or at least I haven't found one, so it's still a fun read. And I'll keep hoping that Karen Sisco makes an appearance soon."
"OK. So, I picked up the latest Elmore Leonard book because he is one of my favorite authors, and I hadn't read his stuff in a while. Yes, it's true: You'd be hard pressed to find a better writer who such a great ear for dialogue. Michael Chabon is the only other one who comes to mind at the moment who has that talent. Regardless, as Dennis Lehane notes, Leonard is in a class of one. All I can write about this book is that he has not lost his touch.
The story picks up after jack Foley, from Out of Sight, goes to jail and meets another con, named Cundo, whom he befriends. Cundo decides to help Jack by getting him a great lawyer who helps cut Jack's jail term short. Jack is smart enough to know that there is an an ulterior motive, but he goes along with things anyway just to see what transpires. Cundo is smart enough to know that Jack is brilliant and good at what he does, but Cundo is still not as smart as Jack: He thinks he can fool Foley and manipulate, but he's the one who can't help but be manipulated. Good stuff. Easy read. Fun, compelling, sad. BUT if you don't like character-driven stories that evolve simply but still have a load of complexity, go elsewhere. Leonard is complicated reading. He just makes it look easy."
