"I'm a Biggest Looser fan, so I enjoyed reading this book by Jillian Michaels. I found the story of her own personal battle with weight to be really interesting. Her ideas on metabolism, diet and health were interesting as well, however somewhat unrealistic for a mom cooking every day for seven people. I did however like what she said about eating whole foods that haven't been processed. (I guess all those boxes of Captain Crunch I just bought don't count!) She talks a lot about hormone levels and how to eat to regulate your health. It was defiantly worth reading."
"All nutrition books say this is not a diet...but I have to say this is not a diet. Jullian Michaels (love her or hate her, Biggest Loser fans) goes into great length on chemicals in our foods that do not belong in our bodies. Further, she recommends eating all organic. I will be a while considering that one at the current price of a gallon of organic milk, as a for instance. But I have no argument with the premise that we are eating alot of chemicals and non food additives that cannot be good for us. I will try harder to eat things that have a mother or grow in the ground, as Jillian says and to read those ingredients. Most thought provoking for me was her comments on high fructose corn syrup and glutamates. I looked on my mayonaise bottles (I had several) and all mayonaise now seems to contain high fructose corn syrup. Also, I recognize msg as a glutamate but was not familiar with many other terms that are also glutamates. Doritos has about four different glutamates. They are flavor enhancers. This book represents a way of life that is probably more regimented than most of us can muster (even though it represents a simpler way of life!) but we can sure take baby steps to a healthier life style."
"Jillian seems like an all-or-nothing person, and I'm all about moderation, so it's a leap for me to be able to embrace this semi-extreme plan wholeheartedly.
I think she makes some good points about organic foods, limiting use of plastics, microwaving in glass, etc. But one would have to live in a cave and eat bark to truly eliminate all the chemicals. She does make allowances for budget and access, and encourages people to do their best, but some of the info is unsubstantiated."
"I really like Jillian on the Biggest Loser, and I'll admit she did make some interesting and seemingly valid points in this book. It was complicated to read, and designed a bit poorly. There were super complicated charts and text boxes thrown in everywhere without regard to the narrative itself, which constantly interrupted any momentum the book had gained. For me, at least, the message was also impractical. While I know that eating organic is better for you, I can't afford to buy much organic produce, and that alone ruins the entire idea Jillian has for getting all of the bad stuff out of your body. Some people will really enjoy this book, but I think many will also dislike it for it's unreadability and sometimes hard to follow orders."
