"I've read quite a few memoirs and stories about experiences during the Holocaust (including listening to my own Grandfather's story on a cassette tape) and overall, the information given is the same, repeated and verified over and over.
What made this book different was the message of hope throughout it. He was proclaimed "lucky" by a gypsy and his mother took that proclamation to heart. Over and over Tommy slipped through the cracks and managed to escape the fate of his fellow prisoners, and for the first time, through this story, I was able to truly understand the reason why he chore to portray his arrival at Auschwitz as "lucky".
Interesting story - a bit dry at times, but an overall good read."
"The fact that Buergenthal went on to become a judge on the International Court in The Hague and devoted his life to international peace and justice issues gives this book an interesting theme. Buergenthal tells his story quite matter-of-factly and this is more effective than you might think - an eleven year old voice stating the horrors of war he observed firsthand. Buergenthal was also the Dean of my law school (American Univ.) back in the mid-80s. Wish I'd known of his background at that time..."
"Thomas Beurgenthal- born May 11, 1934 in Lubochna Czechoslovaka. His parents Mudek & Gerda Beurgenthal .
Thomas and his family living in Lubochna are made to pack up and move out of their hotel, ending up in a small apartment in Zilina. Thomas's father found a job as a traveling salesman so that left Thomas and his mother home alone. One day the police came to the door and ordered them to pack their belongings. They were told that the Jews were being expelled from the country. Thomas's mother demanded to talk to the chief of police and told him that they were Germans, showing him her passport, which was a Germans drivers license. The chief ordered the police to escort them home. Deciding it was to dangerous to continue to live there, they decided to move to Poland.
One day his mother came home very excited. She had visited a fortune teller who told her about her family and that her son was "ein Gluckskind" - A Lucky Child . But on their lucky day Hitler invades Poland and this is the start of Thomas's remarkable struggle to survival story begins.
When reading his story, my stomach was in knots . I have a hard time reading about the Holocaust, such a horrendous crime. Thomas does a wonderful job , detailing his time in the camps, how he was able to survive day to day . I wanted to cry and hug him and make his hurt go away. It was a fascinating read and I highly recommend it."
"I find myself fascinated by stories of people, particularly children, who manage to overcome incredible odds such as surviving the Holocaust. I am drawn to books about them, and A Lucky Child is one of the more moving and amazing stories I have read in this vein. Thomas Buergenthal recounts his life story. Though perhaps the most incredible section details his survival in Auschwitz (his group avoided a selection upon their entrance to the camp, which would have ended Thomas' life quickly, and he managed to stay with his father and learn the tricks to surviving the camp), his life before and after are no less incredible. Thomas goes from a Jewish ghetto to Nazi camps, including grueling death marches, to spending time as the companion of a Polish army regiment, and even more amazing stories. Through it all, Thomas writes impeccably. His emotions do not cloud his writing; he is reflective, fair, and very detailed, though of course the memories of childhood are often clouded.
I found Buergenthal's take on his early life fascinating, especially the tiny details he remembers from the camp. The way he avoided the selections within the camps highlights the fact that even given the way Nazis are often portrayed as mindless, machinistic monsters, they were only human, and prone to mistakes and distractions. He remembers certain details that highlight the brutality, the humanity, the suffering, and the kindness to be found in all of war-torn Europe in the 1940s. And what Thomas did with his life after the camps is to be commended. He is a hero. It was a very worthy read, and Mr. Buergenthal is a man I very much admire after reading his book."
