"i have liked the music of Tom Waits from the moment i heard "Step Right Up" for the first time, and i continue to buy his music when it's released. This book is an unauthorized look into his grow and development as a musician, song writer, arranger, actor, husband, and father. The author does have a musical bias, i don't share, toward the early and middle of Waits' career and he pans some of his later work. The author also appears frustrated at times by his lack of access behind the scenes, which is what one needs when writing a biography. i enjoyed the book for the minimal glimpse it affords behind the stage curtain into Waits' life and am grateful my daughter brought the book home to me."
"Interesting because Waits is interesting. The writing is serviceable. Very little will be revelatory to devoted fans. Still, Waits is such a fascinating character that even this unauthorized bio makes for a highly enjoyable quick read. The author is perhaps a bit too much of a fan and his album "reviews" within the text get a bit tiresome whether the reader agrees with them or not."
"So ambivalent about this. I feel a bit wrong to read an unauthorized biography - and who can blame Waits for not wanting someone to write yet another one? Still - as a huge Waits fan I'm always curious about him. Hoskyns draws from a variety of sources - his own interviews with Waits over the years as well as others', and the handful of people who willingly spoke with him (most of Waits' friends and associates refused). Eventually it becomes clear that he's grasping a bit - there are a great many descriptions of songs, musicians, etc. and it becomes more a critique than a biography. Probably worth reading for the hardcore Waits fan, but there was nothing new or especially revelatory here."
"An extremely unauthorized bio of Tom Waits, this book leads us from Waits' beginnings at the Troubador up until the Glitter and Doom tour this past year.
Honestly, I mostly never really want to know the person behind my favorite music and Waits has become one of my top favorites. I don't know, I guess I always figure that I'll be really disappointed if the person turns out to be a jackass and kicks puppies or something. I'm still a huge fan of Waits, probably even more so now.
This took forever to read because I didn't realize (or pay attention to the fact that) I missed almost everything in Waits' early career. I pretty much was introduced around Swordfishtrombone and went from there. The Waits I always liked was the gruff, hoarse, eccentric who pounded on chest of drawers to get percussion (Mule Variations being one of my absolute favorites). Who knew?
I ended up downloading virtually everything in the Waits discography and listening to it as I read the book, which accounts for why it took so damn long to finish. Closing Time is a Waits I never knew existed and one that I really like, although it doesn't eclipse the post-swordfish era.
Although I disagreed with the author....often...I still think this had a lot of great insight into the making of everything in the Waits vault and is fairly well rounded. Clearly there are issues with Brennan being a songwriting partner that I don't have, but to each their own"
