"When Sylvia Bergstrom Compson discovers some letters in an old desk, it takes her back to 1859 and the story of a slave Joanna who had made it as far as Elm Creek in her bid for freedom. Recaptured and then forced to go back, she leaves behind her master's baby. The story then goes with Joanna to VA and then SC where she finally escapes during the war. She goes back to Edistoe Island after the war - her former plantation - where she's given a land grant and forms a quilting group. "The latest of the Elmer Creek Quilters series!!! This is set almost all in the years of 1859-1864 just before and during the Civil War and follows Joanna the runaway slave that came to Elm Creek on her way to Canada and was recaptured. As always the author writesa great book that gives insights into the lives of those she writes about. Joanna was a strong individual who no matter what happens to her stays true to her desire to be free. And no matter what keeps up the art of quilting that she learned at Elm Creek. It was an interesting read because I visited Charleston, SC a couple years ago and loved it. It was great to see it through her eyes as it was then."
"I enjoyed this book; I'm a beginning quilter and happened to do an extensive research project last year on the idea of slave/abolitionist quilts. While I liked the ending Chiaverini put on Joanna's story, I like The Sugar Camp Quilt and The Runaway Quilt (especially The Runaway Quilt) more. I also think she was wise to leave Sylvia and the others (as characters) with conjecture, rather than saying, Yes, this quilt was made by Joanna, period. Historically, there is no proof for the idea of a slave quilt code, although the verbal histories had to get their start somewhere. . .I have to say, these books of Chiaverini's are one reason I made the slave quilts my research project for the class I was taking. I'm still hopeful there will be slave quilts *definitively* identified. I like this series as a whole, although some books in it are much better than others."
"This is a series and I hadn't read the previously written books. Usually authors will give context to the relationship between characters but this author did not. I was intrigued by the regular characters, a group of women devoted to quilting, and may pick up an early book in the series if I need something to read and they're available but it was difficult to get truly involved with them. They were mostly just names and too many of them began with S (Sylvia and Sarah and something else).
This was also a story within a story. The regular characters in the series acted more as a way to introduce the other story which was set just before the Civil War and was about a runaway slave who may or may not be related to one of the regular characters. This story was very interesting and kept me hooked."
