"I was not a fan of William Buckley, however I heard an interview with Christopher Buckley on NPR and he and the book sounded interesting. Other than doing a good bit of name dropping, the author did not over glorify his parents. Neither did he vilify them. It was,I believe, a truly honest and loving tribute to them.
It was surprisingly entertaining for a book about the death of ones parents. I found out that Willaim Buckley was an avid sailor,a devout Roman Catholic and that English was not his first language. Christopher admits his mother and father were not the normal doting parents. Nevertheless, after reading the book, I found his Father perhaps not exactly lovable, but quite endearing. His Mother not so much.
Christopher's book has motivated me to read at least one of William Buckley's many books. I think that paying that homage is a fitting response to this book."
"After this son of two of the most well-known conservative parents eschewed his father's (william F. Buckley) politics and endorsed Obama for president last year, causing the loss of his position with The National Review, the uber conservative publication that his father started in 1955, I decided he was interesting enough to actually seek out. I soon realized that he had written 'Thank You for Smoking', which I saw in movie form, and my interest was cemented.
This memoir of losing both his mother and father, Pat and William F Buckley, in a short period, was a lovely and well-written book. It was neither an expose tell-all celebrity scorcher nor a sentimental and overwrought ode to perfect parents. Rather this book honors his famous parents with a fond but hardly reverent portrait. As the writer himself said, "I'm a writer, and when the universe hands you material like this, not writing about it amounts either to waste or a conscious evasion."
Despite being no fan of the elder Buckley's politics, and having little awareness of WFB (as his son calls him) or Pat Taylor Buckley, outside of a general cultural understanding of their importance in the conservative pantheon, I enjoyed this book immensely.
I should add a note that while I started off reading the book, I switched to listening via e-audiobook around Chapter 7, and having the author's voice as narrator may have improved my experience of this one!"
"This a book full of charm and grace. Buckley, an obviously erudite man who wears his erudition lightly, shares stories about his famous parents and his loss of both them in the same year. One need not be a fan of William F. Buckley's politics (I'm not) to nonetheless be impressed by his accomplishments and the passion and joie de vivre with which he lived his life.
The book feels very much like an old friend (albeit, a very smart, educated and well-spoken old friend) sharing stories about his folks and what he had to face with them at the end of their lives. As is of often the case when thoughtful people *really* talk about real life challenges we all will face sooner or later, one emerges not only warmed by some good story telling but feeling that one has learned a little bit from how Buckley confronted them."
"Written by the only child of Pat and William F. Buckley Jr., this is the story of the 10 month period when first his mother, and then his father died 2 years ago. Having lost my own parents within 5 months of each other five years ago, I was intrigued.
His writing is funny and touching. He says he had promised himself NOT to write about his parents (he's written several other books) but he had to do this book, as a way of delaying the moment of letting them go. He starts out with a thought that all of us have, regardless of our age, when our last parent dies; that we're suddenly orphans. And how weird we feel about that as adults, but yet, there it is. You'd think the book would be overly sad, but it's not. I laughed out loud at some of the antics of his parents, both when they were young and as they aged. I wish Christopher had siblings; he could share all this with them and it would be easier.
I recommend this to anyone who has lost a parent, and anyone that may someday become an orphan...I guess to anyone."
