"I always consider it a good day when I come across a new Anne Perry novel. Execution Dock, a novel featuring the detective William Monk and his trusty sidekick, his wife Hester, seems to the latest of the Monk novels. Perry often uses social issues upon which to base her mysteries and this time, she has used the issue of child sexual exploitation and pornography. Even though we moderns like to think that those issues arose only in modern times, Perry shows that perversity has no boundaries when it comes to human nature.
Monk and Hester find themselves searching through the dark alleys and riverside shops as they track down evidence to put the pornographer on trial and save the boys he captures and uses to satisfy his wealthy, high class clientele.
As always, Perry doesn't hold back in her depiction of Victorian life among the poor underclass. By the time the villains come to their gruesome end, readers will feel relief. What's left is the knowledge that perversity and exploitation live on."
"This is the last book in the William Monk series. It makes a good case, as could my eldest daughter, for reading books in a series in order. I found I was really curious about the relationship between Monk and his wife, Monk's early life, Monk's involvement with the River Police. I have checked out the first two books in the series, so I'll start at the beginning. This book was good. I suppose that is characteristic of good writing that books in a series can stand alone. I liked the characters. The book could have moved faster. Too many details were repeated, I thought. A new term I learned was 'hostage of fortune' which means caring enough about something that you can't afford to lose it, so people can make you do what they want. I enjoyed the courtroom scenes, although the result was not always what I would choose. "The message to the people was that skill wins, not honor." Wisdom: "The process of thought required to explain sometimes clarifies the mind.""
"This Anne Perry book takes place in Victorian London and features Commander Monk of the River Police and his wife, Hester, who runs a clinic for abused women. It begins with the capture and trial of a man (Phillips) who is running a brothel with young boys. The man is defended by Sir Oliver Rathbone, hired presumeably by a rich and powerful patron of Phillips, who uses his knowledge through friendship of Monk and Hester to make it appear they have used emotion rather than facts to accuse Phillips. In spite of the fact they cannot arrest Phillips again for the same murder, Monk and Hester will not rest until they can rid the city of this vermin."
"Over many years, I have enjoyed Perry's several mystery series. This installment in the Monk collection is descriptive, well-written, and brings familiar readers old favorite characters as well as introduces new ones we may see in future volumes. In her many mysteries, Perry captures and explores the seamier sides of Victorian London, as well as genteel society. She has done this admirably again. I guess I am simply growing tired of the seamy side of Victorian London. There can't be many sexually deviant practices left unexplored by Perry over which to commit murder."
