"I tried reading this whole book, I really did, but only got about a third of the way through. She has an interesting way of looking at things that did make me think, but the stories were depressing to me, the characters unloveable, and nothing really seemed to happen. Everything was about the character's feelings and perspective, sometimes their emotional journeys - which is all good in moderation - but a whole book's worth? As I read, I found my mind wandering and I kept waiting for something to happen to draw me in. I could probably read this whole book in very small doses - like over a span of a year, but it was a loaner and it's time to give it back to its owner."
"Reading this book is like climbing through a dark, wet forest and coming upon a fallen, rotting tree covered with colorful fungus. Sometimes it seems important -- that it's getting at something essential about life, death and sex -- and sometimes it just seems like a moment where you see small things that have almost nothing to do with your life.
This book has some great stories. Several of the best stories start out horribly and I said to myself at the beginning "This story will go nowhere." And instead, they became the ones I remember.
Other stories that seem like memorable, deep set-ups (talking about the Iraq War, for instance) get bogged down. This is better than "Veronica" but not as good as her old classics. Still: Mary Gaitskill is always worth reading."
"I grabbed this book because everyone who reviews short stories seems to hold Gaitskill as the best of the genre. Although she can really write, I did not enjoy the reading. Miserable characters in unappealing situations, making bad choices. No one is ever happy, including the reader. I have read some very disturbing stories this summer (Oprah's latest selection!) but this collection is entirely forgettable."
"I wouldn't advise reading this book. Gaitskill's writing is too loose. I've enjoyed everything I've read by this author in the past. Take some time to read Bad Behavior or Because they wanted to. Two girls Fat and Thin is also a good read if you don't mind reading about Rand and her followers. Gaitskill should have waited a bit found a little more inspiration and created characters that were more viable. Philosophy isn't her strong point."
