"This book is barely even worth my time in writing a review so I am going to keep it short and to the point. It stinks. It is not really a story about war or even really about The Japanese girl Hiroko, as the summary above will have you think. The bomb is over and done in the first chapter. The characters introduced into the story after the bomb are pointless, unlikeable, and weird people. Namely a married couple, Elizabeth and James, that are apparently having marital troubles and the reason is very vague and I had no desire to contine reading their pointless conversations and arguments till page 300 to find out what they meant on page 35. Readers also know that Elizabeth obviously hated her brother very much because she and James had to have wild, passionate sex upon learning of his death. Too weird and again, I was not going to read till page 300 to find out why. On a good note, the prose was nice in spots, but I got the feeling the author was trying to impress someone as it came across as pompous sometimes."
"Great for the first two-thirds of the book. Unfortunately, it seems as though Ms. Shamsie suddenly realized she had a deadline to meet and she whipped through the rest of the story with little attention to detail and (apparently) no attention to her characters. Those that were still around at the end of the book were behaving like totally different people by that point. Many in our book group loved it, but I was a little disappointed at the loss of momentum.
Still, it was an interesting telling of like in Karachi - at Partition and now. I do wish I could have seen the Karachi of the 1960s and 70s -before the U.S. helped create the "freedom fighters" that now plague our world with their extremism. It's definitely not the city it used to be."
"This first part of the novel powerfully evokes Miroko's character, manages to convey some of the horror the bombing of Nagasaki, and powerfully conveys longing for a space in which peoples from varied cultures can mingle. The image of Konrad's broken bird-books hanging from their tree was memorably and poignant.
I will reread this book because of these powerful images but also to understand why I struggled with the last part.
The tragic failures that Shamsie's characters confront reminded me of E. M. Forster's Howards End, as they painfully try to only connect. It left me with some of the same feelings of sympathy and frustration that book inspired. Some of the interchanges between Kim and Hiroko were especially painful, partly, because they may be meant to represent lost possibilities for conversation and healing broken off by bigotry, ignorance, anger, and personal pain.
But I was also frustrated with how some of the characters seemed to carry an allegorical weight, burdened with representing a history of nations, that seemed to flatten the life out of them. The apparent stereotyping of characters made it difficult for me not to feel resistant to the novel's powerful ideas at times."
"an amazing book in its scope with a very complex story. it begins in nagasaki as the atom bomb makes the world go white and burns the shadow of three cranes from a kimono onto hiroko's back. after physically healing, hiroko travels to india to find her dead german lover's sister who is married to an englishman. from there the book takes on the complexities of a world repeating mistakes and hatreds. this book covers india and pakistan at time of partition, covers terrorism on a personal level and is an intriguing story with many twists and turns."
