"Genetically modified with supernatural abilities, four teens are on the run from those who experimented on them. They're not concerned with future experiments - just the all-too-likely threat of termination. But escaping is just the beginning. From warehouses, to mean streets, to forests and more, their powers may not be enough to keep them unscathed.
The second book in a trilogy, The Awakening should definitely not be read first. Also, it ends in a cliff-hanger, which is bloody annoying considering that Book 3, The Reckoning, isn't out until April or May 2010. While the Darkest Powers series as a whole is pretty darn good (I've only read the first two instalments), on its own The Awakening doesn't really work. Basically the story's about getting from A to B, which leaves the bulk of the plot points just obstacles that don't really teach us anything new. Yes, it's a page-turner, even if it does still feel like filler.
But here's something curious: In Living with the Dead, the ninth book in Kelley Armstrong's adult series, an Australian is mentioned. Seeing a review of the upcoming tenth book, Frostbitten, the Australian definitely has a major part to play. Though the term gullible mentioned in relation to that character has me wary.
The author is Canadian, though her novels are mostly set in the US. So I'm not entirely sure it's a coincidence that at about the 3/4 mark of The Awakening, an Aussie is mentioned - a man-eating werewolf Aussie, in fact. Will the Otherworld and Darkest Powers series crossover? Will Australians be the next trend in urban fantasy antagonists? As one myself, I'm extremely curious.
P.S. I meant me being Australian, not an urban fantasy antagonist. Or am I...? ;-)"
"This book starts off right where The Summoning leaves off. Chloe is trapped in the Edison Group, and is trying to find a way out to get back to her friends. I liked this book even better than The Summoning. It had a ton of action, a little romance throughout, though, there is a sort of love triangle that is happening. Love triangles make me so frustrated! I'm pretty sure which guy Chloe is really starting to like though. I won't say who, but they worry about each other, and look out for one another throughout the entire book. Hopefully something will happen between them in the last book! I'm crossing my fingers!;) I loved Chloe's character, and my favorite character Derek. They grew so much throughout the book, and are both starting to find themselves, and accept that they are different. I don't know what it is about these books, but they just seem to suck me in and I've finished the book before I even realize it. I can't wait for the third book, and hope to see more romance, what the deal is with the necklace, and to see if they bring down the Edison Group!"
"The second book in "Darkest Powers" trilogy starts where the first one left off - Chloe is at the research institute and contemplating escape. What follows is pretty much Chloe's and her friends' journey to get to the person who might be able to help them find Derek's and Simon's father (which is I suppose is what this trilogy is about, but I am not sure at this point).
The first book in the trilogy is undoubtedly drawn out and artificially extended, but this second book sure beats that. While "The Summoning" has at least a resemblance of a story (specifically, the discovery of the true nature of Lyle House), "The Awakening" is truly 400 pages of filler. Almost nothing is added to the story arc - only 3 pages describing the purpose of the experiments on supernaturals and the idea that's Derek's and Simon's father can be found with the help of his friend - Andrew. The rest of the book is pretty much limited to: hiding in various warehouses (150 pages), hiding in an abandoned house (50 pages), riding a bus to Andrew's house (150 pages), and finally meeting Andrew (10 pages). "The Awakening" truly has no climax of any sorts. It reads as a boring series of events that serve no purpose but to reveal the characters, which is fine, when not used so shamelessly to fill pages and pages at the expense of the real plot. There were some nice Derek/Chloe moments, and only these moments saved the book from being a complete waste of time.
If I had hopes that the trilogy would pick up after rather slow first book, I don't have them any more. The second book proved to be as boring of a read as the first one, and even worse. This is pity, because Armstrong knows how to write an engaging and tightly plotted book. This Darkest Powers "trilogy" however is a shameless attempt to extend 250 pages of story into 3 books 400 pages each.
I am not sure if I will ever get back to this series. I expect I will not be able to remember much about it even a month later."
"After being locked up by a group of 'scientists' bent on studying teens with supernatural powers, Chloe is desperate to escape to find out what has happened to her friends Simon, a sorcerer, and Derek, a werewolf. Chloe also discovers that she and the other teens from the Lyle Group home were genetically modified as babies in hopes of creating supernaturals without any side effects. Only things went wrong with the experiment and none of the teens are aware how uncontrollable their powers have become. Chloe herself tries to come to grips with betrayal and her own talent for seeing ghosts and proves herself to be an extraordinary girl time and again.
I am totally digging this series. I love that Kelley Armstrong doesn't force character development and relationships to happen. She allows Chloe, Derek, Simon and even Tori to go along, make choices and by doing so shows you their growth instead of just telling about it. There is also some definite potential in Chloe and Derek's relationship - I just love these two by the way. By the same token, Armstrong thankfully has allowed things to go slow with them to the point that the relationship has built to something completely believable. The reader can easily understand every exchange, even when all is not explained. My kind of book. My only complaint is it all went by too fast - the action is literally non-stop. But all that action brings some serious information to light and I for one can NOT wait for the next book, I'm sure it will only get better."
