"I don't know what I was expecting when I picked this up, but it certainly wasn't what I got. I know the subtitle is "Adventures of an Incurable Optimist", but I didn't realize just how fully that phrase embodies Fox and the way he lives his life.
I have not read Fox's other book, and to be honest, I always thought he was just kind of a walking joke. Good with humor, but not much else. I admit I was saddened when he announced publicly that he had Parkinson's, and that he was leaving "Spin City", but I also regret to admit that once he was "out of the public eye" so to speak, he was out of my mind too.
He is a brilliantly eloquent man, with an ability to turn a phrase that had me laughing one minute and on the verge of tears the next (and yes, sometimes both at once). I know with his condition he certainly needed considerable help in transcribing the manuscript, and I don't claim to know how much (if any) of the book was ghost written. From what I have come to know of him, though, I would guess that number to be right around 0%.
The four sections of the book all spoke to me in different and pleasant ways, but my favorite by far was the second chapter, "Politics". I don't even know what to say about it that wouldn't do it a serious injustice. Just read it. Read it all."
"Lately I seem to be reading stories of overcoming adversity - poverty, blindness, Parkinson's. I admire Michael J. Fox for being the honest, loving, compassionate, talented person that he is and for concentrating on the many good things in his life instead of wallowing in self pity. There are many heart-wrenching moments in this book, but also many funny moments and just plain good sense lessons. One of my favorites was when he was on a cross-country driving trip with his then 8 year-old son and got hit with every parent's nighmare question "Are we there yet?" He thought about how his father would have reacted (getting angry) and decided to take a different tack. He decided to "go all metaphysical on his ass" by stopping the car and saying "I don't know, Sam. What do you think? Where is 'there?' And when we get 'there' will it be 'here?'""
"When I was younger, I always wished that Alex P. Keaton was my older brother. There was something magnetic about Michael J. Fox's personality even then. Reading this book (and his first book from several years ago) made me love him even more. The title of the book is perfect because if there is anything that comes through in this book, it is that he is incredibly optimistic. Even though he is realistic about his Parkinson's, he maintains this infectious hope that you can just tell has a huge effect on everyone he encounters (okay, except rush limbaugh...). He really makes you root for him. I especially love in this book when he talks about his family. I could tell that he absolutely and sincerely adores his wife and children -- and not because he says that he adores them, but because he shows that he adores them in the stories he tells about them and the way he describes them. It's not just lip service -- he really means it. And it still would be pretty cool to have him for an older brother. Oh, and he gets bonus points for mentioning "This American Life". Overall, I liked his first book better, but I felt like giving this one 4 stars just on the basis of MJF being so completely likeable."
