"I thoroghly enjoyed this book, cover to cover. I rated it 4 out of 5 stars for only one reason: this book cannot stand alone. Too many references to previous books that would make it too choppy to read as a 1st time Kim Harrison reader.
However, as a fan with the entire series glowing from my book-shelves, I would be happy to read the entire series just to get to the teasers at the end of this book and wait impatiently for the next...oh yea! I guess I'm already there..."
"White Witch, Black Curse is the seventh installment in Kim Harrison's bestselling series about sassy yet powerful witch and private investigator Rachel Morgan. Beginning with Dead Witch Walking, the series is set in the Hollows, a fictional Cincinnati suburb populated primarily by witches, vampires, and other supernatural creatures.
Harrison's magical setting and alternate history display a consistency that makes them believable, yet ever-so enticing. Her characters are independent and strong, though they still display their own sets of enchanting personality flaws that make them utterly "human." Harrison is adept at weaving a world that will charm and thrill fantasy fans.
That being said, White Witch, Black Curse is not the finest example of Harrison's work. The story attempted to connect the dots between characters introduced in previous short story-lines, while largely ignoring some of the solid characters readers have grown attached to throughout the previous six installments of the series. While some of the characters proved promising in the short story themes, they did not fulfill their roles to the fullest in this book and rather seemed a means to an end for cobbling the story together without truly giving us much background development as to who they are and why we should be emotionally invested in what happens to them. Some of the standard favorites made little or no appearance at all. Ceri, ancient elf and former demon familiar, was missing in action entirely, as was Rachel's ruggedly independent werewolf pack leader, David. Powerful elf Trent Kalamack and demon mentor Al made brief yet entertaining appearances.
Though White Witch, Black Curse was not the best book in the series, particularly following on the heels of the masterfully written The Outlaw Demon Wails, it still leaves readers wanting for more in the Hollows universe. Ultimately, the Rachel Morgan series is one of the finest examples to be found in the urban fantasy genre. The world that Harrison crafts is absolutely inspired, and fans of novels about witches, vampires, werewolves, and other paranormal beings should not miss out on this delightful and magical escape.
The most fantastic promotional items arrived in the mail with my review copy of this book. I received two seed packets for "genetically engineered T4-Angel tomatoes." Fans of the Hollows series will no doubt get this witty inside joke. Kim Harrison often gives away freebie tidbits and extras to fans through her website."
"I have to admit it, I like these Kim Harrison books. I usually don't fall for a series but she hooked me in with the first novel and here I am, reading number seven. What do I like about these books?
1) I like the main character, Rachel Morgan. She's a female action hero who evolves in every book - always growing the character.
2) I like the Hollows and the sci-fi storyline. Who knew tomatoes would be the end of the human race?
3) I like action.
4) I enjoy reading and learning about the other characters and how Kim Harrison adds new characters in every book but doesn't overuse them, like the gargoyle, Bis.
I liked White Witch, Black Curse because it added characters, the Banshee (Mia) and the ghost (Pierce). It also gave closure to Kisten's death as I don't like when a storyline drags on and on. I enjoy the demon, Al. He was particularly smart and sassy in this book but didn't have a large role to play.
*********spoiler*********
Art killed Kisten to make Ivy suffer for putting him in jail for one of Piscary's crimes so she wouldn't have to sleep with him to move up in the I.S. hierarchy. Denon was his scion. When Art was bitten by Kisten, he called Denon and both died violently in a oubliette in an old city tunnel. Rachel then used a black charm to set fire to the hiding place, fusing it shut, and her mark would warn anyone away from tampering with it."
"Didn't like the way the book started. Although it did begin in the middle of something (which writing advice books encourage), I wasn't all that interested in going over, yet again, Kisten's death scene. And then, at the end of the book, to find find that the killer is someone we haven't been involved with throughout the series--and that the killer is already dead!--feels like a bait and switch. After dragging the whole "who is Kisten's killer" out for the previous two books, I'm glad the question is laid to rest, but it wasn't particularly satisfying.
I was glad Ford found a way to be at peace.
I thought Marshal was pretty me-focused in his saying good-bye to Rachel: "Just as I decided to let you in my life, you screw up." Rather than: "I realized that I wanted to take a chance on building a life with you...."
Pierce is intriguing, but I don't appreciate the TOTAL CLIFFHANGER Harrison leaves us with when Pierce doesn't get a chance to explain what deal it is he has made with Al.
I'm tired of Rachel not knowing enough. She *did* make strides in coping, though, when she figured out a way to confront Al about snatching people who are around her.
There's no way you could read this book without having read the previous ones, and I've decided I hate series like this. I really prefer stand-alone books, although it's OK if they refer in passing to characters that have been the focus in other books.
In the end, the book was interesting enough that I'll keep reading the series--please let there be a lot more of Pierce in the next book!"
