About this title: Goodbye, techy fads and celebrity bling. "Flanagan's Smart Home" is about household items so normal and necessary that we literally can't live without them. She walks you through your bedroom, your kitchen, your bathroom, and all other rooms, as she offers her knowledge of the best - and only - items you'll need. Flanagan explains not only which products are better to use overall (sometimes she's brand-specific; usually not), but she also lets you know ...

"This is a reference book for anyone looking to downsize, or for those just starting out. Written by an architect/designer, the book outlines the 98 essential items needed for a household (I really thought it could have been pared down even further), giving the history of each item, as well as recommendations for the best products on the market today. Some of the suggestions were interesting and novel, while others were no-brainers. She recommends using a 100% natural latex rubber mattress, for example (something I had never even heard of) for its durability, breathability, and comfort. What I enjoyed most was understanding the origins of the most banal of day-to-day household items, and how some were quite revolutionary at the time of their invention (like the swing-arm can opener). I first checked the book out from the library, and then decided to buy it so I could reference it over the upcoming weeks as we move and start feathering yet another nest."
"This book is well-organized and no-nonsense. Following Flanagan's advice could probably build you a very clean and efficient home. It could probably also empty your wallet and strip you of items whose value is basically sentimental.
I liked how the book is laid out, the sections are divided up by room. While it was fun to day dream about dumping out every drawer in the kitchen and starting over... that's not terribly practical. This book would be useful to come back to again and again as a reference to help you re-populate various rooms when appliances die or it's redecorating time.
Flanagan certainly knows her stuff and picks interesting and useful looking items to populate her super-house."
