"I LOVE this book. On one side it has the pictures of items to eat, on the other side it has picture of items to avoid. Then it tells you exactly WHY. Lots of great info other than just the "eat this, not that" comparisons (which are often surprising).
On the NOT THAT list: Kelloggs Raisin Bran, Multi Bran Chex, Oscar Mayer Deli Fresh Chicken Breast strips, Hunts Crushed Tomatoes, Progresso Tomato Basil Soup, Newmans Own Tomato & Basil pasta sauce, Mission Multi Grain Wraps, Sara Lee Heart Healthy 100% Whole Wheat Bakery Buns, Arnold Double Fiber 100% Whole Wheat bread
Now don't you want to know what's on the EAT THIS list?
I love that he even includes junk food, sugar cereal, chips, and ice cream. So if you want to eat junk, at least you're not eating the worst of the worst."
"I learned that reading food labels will keep you on top of the game! I do this a lot so was not surprised by many things I found out. I did realize, however, that I often don't take the time to read labels in the frozen section -- so that's where I found my most surprises. A few things in the book I really liked: 1) A section that lists fruits and veggetables along with how to pick them, their peak season, and what nutrition they provide. 2) A visual showing which fruits you should actually buy organic. 3) Every time it says a food is good or bad, it tells you why. This really helps because you can grasp what things make the biggest nutritional difference in other foods. I also enjoyed the layout of the book -- easy to look through and read."
"I found this to be very informative. The choices the author suggests are not always the absolute healthiest options out there. But they're the most realistic - easy to find in most groceries and something most family members would find to be tasty. Some items were real eye openers for me. I had no idea my favorite yogurt and BBQ sauce contain so much sugar!"
"Before I read this book I just looked at calorie counts... this has showed me that I should look at grains, sugar, and fat too. I don't really buy a lot of frozen meals or processed food, besides cereal and snacks, and this has definitely steered me away from buying a lot of them. Also, I'm never drinking soda or canned ice tea ever again.
One thing that I feel is missing is that the processed items I buy aren't in the book. I know it can't cover everything, but as a reference book it isn't that handy. Also, I feel like some of the comments don't really explain WHY food X is a better alternative than food Y. Other than that, I think it's a pretty decent book to read if you buy a lot of processed foods."
