"I'm hooked on the "Best American" essay and short story collections, and they're usually five star material for me because they really do seem to collect the best examples of their specific genre of writing for the year (obviously somewhat owing to taste).
This one, however, was really uneven. There were some great pieces - I particularly loved John Brant's "Following Terry Fox," J.E. Moehringer's Pete Carroll profile, Sam Shaw's "Run Like Fire Once More," and Steve Friedman's "Dogged."
But there was a lot of repetition, too. There were two heavily overlapping profiles of Bo Jackson, one of which completely subsumed the other. There were multiple writings about the plight of injured retired football players that simply ran together. Jeanne Marie Laskas' "G-L-O-R-Y!" didn't seem to be a sports piece at all, with only a tenuous connection via pro sports cheerleading - while it was good, it was totally out of place.
Whenever I read a really uneven compilation, the good pieces show me that the editor really has a good eye for picking good stuff, but the bad pieces make me wonder if he isn't doing favors for old friends. 70% of this collection is tremendous, but there's some serious repetition in other parts and a few really poor picks."
