About this title: Having brought to life eccentric cereal king John Harvey Kellogg in "The Road to Wellville" and sex researcher Alfred Kinsey in "The Inner Circle," Boyle now turns his fictional sights on an even more colorful and outlandish character: Frank Lloyd Wright.

"I wanted to read this book because Lorna Horneland, whom I knew at Epiphany Lutheran Church in the 70's, taught piano to one of the Mrs. Wright's daughters, and told me a story of going to Taliesin and being told, "This is not a good day for you to give a lesson; Mr. Wright is not having a good day." Apparently such an occurrence was not unusual. So my first desire was to see if Lorna was mentioned in the book. Well, darn, she wasn't, but I did figure out which Mrs. Wright's daughter she taught piano lessons, and learned enough about Mr. Wright about Frank Lloyd and his taste in women to be quite dismayed. TC Boyle decided to make the murder of Mamah Cheney the climax of the book, and since this awful event happened before Wright married his last two wives, Boyle made the second questionable decision to tell the stories of Wright's women in reverse chronological order. His decision irritated me throughout the reading and caused me to put the book aside in favor of other more accessible ones time after time. That being said, when I got caught up in the individual stories of each woman, I was fascinated. God save all of us from the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright. Next time we drive to Minnesota we will check out the open times at Taliesin and visit - last time we drove by it was closed and we were in too much of a hurry to wait a day. Now I know the lurid details I must see the place and imagine Maude, Mamah, and Olgivanna there with Frank, along with all the assistants, and household help. Boyle certainly outdoes himself with flowery prose, but I trust his research, and I learned a great deal by sticking with this book."
"TC Boyle continues to mine historical fiction of the eccentric Americal male genius variety, much in the vein of his depiction of Dr. Alfred Kinsey in 'The Inner Circle'. 'The Women' follows Frank Lloyd Wright and his four main intimate relationships + an oblique look at the influence of Ma Wright. Once again the author starts with source material that is truly stranger and more dramatic than fiction....but he does his usual competent job and this ends up being a really fun read with the feel of a romatic epic coupled with the edifying feel of a straight biography. While it glosses, ie. pretty much skips over the details of Franks "real" artistic output, you certainly get an intimate look at the man beyond the relentless self promoter and pompous horizontalist, as well as an introduction to the intriguing women his heart found despite a busy and all-too public professional life ......"
"This book is an interesting account of the life of Frank Lloyd Wright and the women he loved. Having read "Loving Frank", I knew about his relationship with his wife and Mamah, the woman who gave up her husband and children to be with him.. This book takes you beyond them to the women who became his second and third wives. Boyle writes well, but be prepared to use a dictionary when you read...or try to figure out the meanings in context!
Wright was a brilliant, eccentric, egotistical man. I enjoyed reading more about him and the women who chose to live with him."
"An interesting counterpoint to Horan's Loving Frank, T.C. Boyle's fictional account of Frank Lloyd Wright's tumultuous love affairs begins at the end with his third wife Olgivanna and works its way backward to his first affair with Mamah Cheney and the tragedy at Taliesin. Narrated by a fictional Japanese apprentice, complete with footnotes commenting on his own relationships as much as Wright's, The Women is as much an exploration of the meaning of love and its place in our lives as it is an exploration of Wright's relationships specifically. With the exception of Tadashi, the narrator, none of the characters are particularly sympathetic, especially Wright, whose genius here is not for architecture but for avoiding reckonings, emotional and financial, and Miriam Noel, who appears as little better than a caricature of Blanche from A Streetcar Named Desire. More harmful to the story is the lack of Wright's wife, Kitty - she does not become a fully fleshed character until the very end, and then only briefly - and Wright's mother, Anna, who appears mainly in footnotes and as a foil to Wright's inanamoratas.
More than a 2, but not really a 3 - for those truly interested in Wright, Secrest's or Huxtable's biographies would be a better choice."
