"I've spent an hour or so trying to figure out how the review for this book should go.
My rating is not based on the literary quality of the book. It's based on how the book made me feel. While parts were thought-provoking, the majority of the book dragged my spirits down so low that just reading it put me in a perpetually bad mood.
The only redeeming parts of the book were from the therapist's point of view, but even then the feeling of helplessness and waste was overwhelming.
It's not an easy read and I pretty much forced my way through it."
"Wiesel writes about a man who seeks professional counseling, and what unravels is untidy. It is an out-of-sequence recollection of events, (childhood during WW II) which make sense to the reader by the end of the book, but along the way it follows the same zig-zag, randomness of the brain's ability to recall and remember. The event is recalled, in all its detail, complete with an emotive response in the body, but the reader experiences the same confusion as the patient in the novel. That's why I consider it a brilliant piece of writing, but not an easy one."
"The interaction between the survivor of multiple tragedies and his psychoanalyst is remarkable. The ending of course makes the book come together after you had given up on expecting any cohesive finale. All Holocaust tales are painful, but this one is rich with other subtleties."
"By Elie Wiesel (yes, that one) - so it's a good guess that it's holocaust-related.
Doriel, living in New York, is the son of holocaust survivors who die tragically after they survive the camps. Unable to make a direct connection to them, and without a tangible understanding of the holocaust, he turns to a psychoanalyst to try to figure out himself and his family."
