"I usually don't read short fiction, but I can't resist zombie stories! The first story in this anthology, by the redoubtable Dan Simmons, features an elementary school teacher who faces down the zombie apocalypse as only an elementary school teacher can. Simmons' story, plus the extremely creepy- and quasi-historical- "Prairie" by Brian Evanson are standouts. Andy Duncan's "Zora and the Zombie" is absolutely fascinating- it's Zora Neale Hurston! In a Zombie story! Poppy Z. Brite's "Calcutta: Lord of Nerves" is definitely not for the squeamish- thin on plot, but I could smell the stench of rotting flesh as I turned the pages. However- as in any anthology, I suppose- there are some clunkers, here, too. I won't pick on them by name. I bailed out on a few of them. Overall, though, the collection isl worth picking up used or borrowing from a library if you're into reanimated corpses and such."
"Now that zombies have successfully crossed over into the mainstream, they've been growing as cliched and boring as vampires. Luckily, there are always exceptions, and this collection is rivaled only by the groundbreaking Skipp/Spector anthologies as a must-own volume. Besides being HUGE, it collects some newer works, including unexpected tales by the likes of Sherman Alexie and Kelly Link. Of course, the knockout punches by old masters like Stephen King, Dan Simmons, David Schow, Joe Lansdale, and George R.R. Martin are well-represented here, too. Also included is 1992's "Calcutta, Lord of Nerves" by Poppy Brite. I think this story is one of the most harrowing - and unique - zombie tales ever written. Bravo to Night Shade Books for releasing this collection!"
"This was kind of a mixed bag for me; the more traditional horror-type, Romero-inspired stories were a miss for me. I guess I didn't enjoy the abject bleakness of them (Hoffman, Simmons).
In contrast, there were some really interesting takes on the Zombie concept that were great (Jeffrey Ford, Clive Barker, Joe Hill).
Definitely worth a read if you enjoy the genre (it's somewhat tangential for me) or if you're looking to source a few new authors."
"Didn't get through all the stories before I had to bring the anthology back to the library. The last story I got to read was Laurell K Hamilton's (starting on pg 202). All stories I read were different from the others, written well, and interesting. What they lacked though was zombieness. Some had the typical "feel" to a zombie story, but most did not. However, I enjoyed each story individually, even if some did need a bit more "BRAINS"...
I will update my review when I get a chance to re-check out the anthology from the library. :)"
