"This was a good book. It was fascinating, and hard to put down. The author handled the stories, and the information and analysis following the stories well. It was easy and filled with awesome information.
But I am just a layman, not a neuroscientist. This book was probably written more for people outside of the field.
However, the author's personal perspective did bleed out more than necessary, and in a slightly irritating manner. And I would have preferred a more organized and comprehensive outline about a practical method for approaching the information--the second to last chapter tried, but it wasn't up to snuff. But I think that about nearly every non-fiction book. So it's probably just me.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone. It is a great read."
"I was a little dissapointed by this book. It a subject matter that I find really facinatating, but the book fell flat.
I don't know if it needed better editing, but I was not finding any consistent narrative that drove the book forward, and that's a shame. There were many instances when I was reading and I could recognize my own decision making process being described, and still, for some reason it still failed to connect. I found the case studies to be inconsistent, too long in some cases, and far too short in others. And whats with all the sports stories? I just skipped right over all the quarterback talk.
I say that I read this book, but that's not entirely true. I got through most of it. I would say that I was probably 30 pages shy of the ending, but I couldn't get myself to plow through it. And I have the new Annie Proulx sitting on top of the piano waiting...."
"How We Decide is expertly composed and succinct, but I can't but feel discontent with the fact that I've already encountered nearly all of Lehrer's illustrative examples in other media (e.g. Diane Rehm interviewed gambling addicts created by L-Dopa treatment for Parkinson's disease; Norman Maclean's Mann Gulch Fire story was retold once in Gladwel's Blink; Damasio's Descartes' Error addresses the fascinating leading role of emotion in so-called "rational" discourse). Even Lehrer's more original sources have already been thoroughly disseminated, for example I already read about the Marshmallow Test in the New Yorker (albeit in Lehrer's own essay) as well as on Lehrer's blog. I appreciate the author's synthesis of the current understanding of the neural origins of decision, but I wish the book had more originality in either depth or scope."
"This is easily the best book I have read on the implications of modern neuro-science for decision making. Really helps understand which decisions are best made consciously and by rational deduction (generally the less complex ones) and which need a combination of data and emotionally intuition (generally the more complex ones). It is extremely well written and structured, with some great memorable examples of decision making under life and death pressure. Particularly memorable is the experienced fire fighter in a prairie fire who knew he couldn't out run the 30mph fire so in a second he burned the ground in front of him and lay down in it. He shouted at his less experienced colleagues to stop and do the same, but their fear circuits would not be overridden, though two accidentally fell into a gully and survived also. 18 firefighters died."
