"This was an amazing book about familie ties. When Beck's family is torn apart by an accident, it is a journey to see how strong the relationships are. Her father dies at sea during a storm. Her sister, Carrie, runs away after she is rescued to try and find her roots. Beck and her brother Travis are left to deal with the fallout with their mother. As the story begins, the family is moving from Ohio to Newport, Rhode Island for a teaching postion so that Maura (the mother) can support her family. There is a lot of history in Newport for Maura as she fell in love there and got pregnant with her oldest child in an affair there. It also was the place where the relationship with her sister Katherine broke down. As Beck and Travis try to adapt to a new school while the search for Carrie continues, Maura must face up to the mistakes of her past in order for her to sort out the present. Beck is wrapped up in math, Travis is wrapped up in football but they all must come together to find what is most important to all of them. This was a very touching book and a story that kept me intersted all the way through."
"theres alot of conflicts in this story. The father drowns, the daughter runs away from home, the other daughter can't resist stealing. The father is not really the father, the daughter is more than just a daughter. The mom decides to move back to newport rhode island to begin a new life. She reconnects with her sister, sees an old lover and tries to recover and forget the miseable, tramatic year. do the conflicts get resolved is the family able to start over?? It is worth reading all the way to the end."
"This was an easy, quick read that I could not put down. The story revolved around the Shaw family and their struggling to deal with the loss of the father/husband through death and the oldest daughter/sister through running away. Maura, the mother, relocates the family to cope with the grief and start her new teaching career. The book shows the struggles of each family member as they try to move forward with their life while constantly searching for what they have lost. The book does illustrate several sister relationships - Maura with her estranged sister Katharine, Beck with her run away sister Carrie and Pell with her sister Lucy (new friends of Beck). It also touches on the relationship of long dead Mary and her sister Beatrice."
"Story follows Maura and her two children, Travis and Beck from Ohio to Newport, Rhode Island after her husband drowns and her oldest daughter runs away. This is about the deep and complicated relationship between sisters and how decisions affect a lifetime. Very dark story but still a good read."
