"History of oil in Texas in general. First 2/3 was very informative. Last third a little too detailed and less interesting. OVerall i enjoyed this recommendation from our library's book of the month"
"If you live in Texas, this should be required reading. If you want to know about Texans, this should be required reading. However, there are some errors in the book, but minor according to my native sources. As a Houstonian, I like that Houston is presented very positively. The Cullen family is alive and well and still philanthropic. Loved the facts about Texas supplying the oil to win WW2. And, a little upsetting that these particular rich folks supported the very conservative point of view that continues to day."
"Originally, I went in to the library to find a non-fiction book in large print. Whenever I am engaged in writing a mystery novel (my favorite read, also) I refrain from reading other such books for fear that I might subconsciously purloin an idea or two. Because the librarian is a friend of my wife's, I felt obliged to accept her suggestion of this book. Little did I realize how absorbed in it I would become over the next few weeks. It is a huge book, and since I have difficulty reading (due to several eye surgeries), I even had to re-new it. But, it was worth it!! This is a broad undertaking, and Mr. Burrough has done the subject matter proud. If you've ever wondered about all that Texas oil money and where it came from, just read this book and find out.
A marvelous book.
Joe Perrone Jr. author of: As the Twig is Bent, Escaping Innocence, and A "Real" Man's Guide to Divorce (First, you bend over and...)"
"Same author as Barbarians at the Gate. Profile of big four; Hunts Murchison. Cullen and Richard/Bass. Covers investing. muti generation wealth. politics. Big four produced more oil than axis powers combined. Cullen gave it all away. Hunts went from richest to bk. much 2nd gen hit bk also. basses multiplied their wealth by bringing in partners (rainwater, not employees)"
