"The idea of beer appeals to my inner blue-collar worker self. The reality of it makes me wrinkle my nose and stick out my tongue in a remarkable impression of the Mr. Yuk sticker. Nope, not a fan of beer, and not a fan of this book, with the exception of the parting speech the beer fairy gives Gracie, which should immediately be incorporated into every graduation ceremony address delivered in the U.S.
I'm told by fans of Robbins that I need to go read something else of his. Something with less beer and more cheer."
"Tom Robbins has had a long, fruitful relationship with the off-beat, zany, and otherworldly. B Is For Beer, his shot at children's fiction, is characteristically quirky.
Let down again by her taciturn father and fly-by-night uncle, and intrigued by the drink of which they seem so enamoured, monkey-dancing 5-year-old Gracie drinks some beer. She throws up, passes out, and is taken on a meander through its origins, manufacture, and effects by the Beer Fairy.
Thankfully, there is no moral to the story - it's just a fun way to educate your kids in the perils and pleasures of alcohol. As bedtime reading, it really depends what you want them to dream of. If you're happy for them to drift off murmuring a multitude of beer brands to the sound of drunken Egyptians, it's a sweet read with a happy ending. If not, something a little less Tom Robbins would better suit"
"Reading a Tom Robbins book is like meeting an old, dear friend and then realizing that you should have never stayed away from him so long. B is for Beer is like comfort food. Like mashed potatoes. Like an old, worn, frayed sweater that molds perfectly to your body. B is for Beer makes you want to revisit Jitterbug Perfume. A great book for children's librarians who need a break from children's literature, but not that big a break. Robbins makes use of many kiddie lit elements and devices, without mocking children's books. A nice, comfy read with priceless, little absurd nuggets of wisdom that you'll want to read and reread."
"As a dedicated Tom Robbins fan and avid reader of his works, I feel blasphemous giving one of his novels anything less than 4 stars, but I am afraid that is the position I find myself in. I guess I just expected more from him, even with a children's book (or a children's book for adults). I read the book in one day, which is nothing to brag about given the short length and easy reading of the writing, but I guess that does suggest that I was entertained enough. And that is the truth, the book is entertaining enough, educational to a degree, and sufficiently cute; however, it is lacking in the imaginative surrealism that his books are generally overflowing with. Sure, there is a degree of magic and a mythical character or two, but it is all rather subpar when stacked up against his other creations. None of this suggests that I will not read the book again, or keep it on my shelf... I just probably will not return to this one as fast as I have with the others. Who knows, perhaps I will wait until I can one day read this to my child."
