About this title: "There are only two kinds of people in the world," according to the old saying, "The Irish - and those who wish they were!" And after reading this evocative book you'll likely agree with such sentiments. Despite Ireland's newfound prosperity as "The Celtic Tiger" - Europe's most affluent nation - there still exists that other enduring and authentic country. It's small, hidden and enticing, and David Yeadon and his wife Anne found their own 'little lost world' here on the Beara Peninsula of Southwest Ireland.Far removed from the touristic hullaballoo of Dublin, Killarney and The Ring of Kerry, ...

"A mixed review for me. David Yeadon is a celebrated writer of travel and discovery- I've long enjoyed reading his articles in National Geographic. His style is so gentle, sweet, engaging and generous- he easily lets his environment lead his way.
In this case, it was the setting of Ireland's wild, mysterious, impossibly gorgeous but little-known Beara Peninsula that captured my eye. Hiking the Beara Peninsula in 2002 began the start of a love affair with Ireland: on a solo journey, I joined a group of 7 strangers and spent two weeks tramping through its bogs, scrambling its rocky climbs through hail, driving rain and golden sun, eating its bounty of salmon and estate-crafted cheese, and falling hopelessly in love with its heartbreaking vistas, lore and legends and warm, wonderful souls.
Yeadon captures the wild, tempestuous spirit of the Beara in his descriptions of its geography, weather and history, but spends an inordinate amount of space focusing on Beara's "counter-culture"- those mostly expats who have escaped to Beara over the years to found spiritual retreats and to live off the grid. It's not that these communities don't exist- I encountered a number of English expats who moved to the Beara in the 90s, forming a sort-of Big Sur/Lost Highway grouping of yippies. It's that Yeadon's focus on them was ultimately pretty boring- I was far less interested in Americans or Brits with enough disposable income to reinvent themselves as artists or aromatherapists or cheesemakers than I was in the Irish whose lives were being transformed by the Celtic Tiger phenomenon.
In the end, I was left with the ache to return, to wander again across windswept moors, passing standing stones and famine houses, gazing across the Atlantic to the mysterious Skelligs, ending each evening in a cozy pub, glass of Jameson's before me, lulled by the sweet refrain of fiddle and bodhran...
A must-read for this girl for whom some of life's most blissful moments were spent hiking on the Beara Peninsula..."
