"Even though it is somewhat dated, this is a very useful book in understanding the historic Japanese mindest and culture. The writing is pretty good, and as a layman I had little trouble understanding what the author was trying to convey."
"Keeping in mind the task the author was charged with (understanding the Japanese reaction to the end of WWII) and the fact that she was not able to do much (if any) fieldwork other than interviews with Japanese immigrants in America -- both huge caveats -- this book seems to have remained fairly authoritative. The patterns she discusses can continue to apply, so long as appropriate nuance is added and skepticism/perspective maintained. No careful reader would mistake this for an accurate account of how the Japanese think, act, and feel now or then. But it is still an interesting read that tells us almost as much about American society in the postwar moment as it does the Japanese."
