"5th grade and above The text of this book is arranged in the neatest way. It is arranged in nine innings. I thought that it was so appropriate for it being a book about baseball. This is upper level reading even though it is considered a picture book. It is arranged in multiple paragraphs in always on a page of negative space. The illustrations in this book are unreal. The art looked like it was taken with a camera. The faces look so real. The clothing is so detailed right down to the strips on the baseball uniforms. The hands of the men have veins the pop up just like a real man. The artwork is so realistic. Nelson paintings were based off of real photographs given to him in order for him to recreate them. He did an amazing job, many of the pictures you have to look very closely in order to realize that they are not photographs. This book would most be appealing to middle school or older readers, primarily because of the large amount of text. This book is not something you would read as a bedtime story, unless you planned to read it for several nights. I was a little apprehensive to read this book because it had so much text, but it really was a quick read for me and I enjoyed hearing the stories from "back in the day". This book continued to teach me just how cruel and unkind people can be. However, it showed perseverance of people oppressed and courage to face indifference to do what you love. Classroom Connection: Social Studies- history of baseball Math- what ball players use to make, what they make now and the percentage of gain"
This book fuses together a simplified yet awesome record of history chronicling this period of time known as "Shadowball." While the children would be fascinated in learning of the history of many Negro League baseball players, they will be wowed by the magnificent illustrations in this book. Most of the art has that "widescreen" feel, like you are right there in the midst of the action on the field. It feels like Kadir Nelson intentionally went for that "larger than life" approach when it came to putting his players on the page. The baseball players almost pop out at you, and Nelson does a tremendous job of including detail and realism to his pictures. This is a definite page turner, and if the history does not excite you, the pictures most certainly will!
History/Physical Education Lesson Idea: Playing a mock baseball game, assigning students to become a Negro League and play ball!"
The art in the story is very realistic. The shading and defintion on the faces of the men seems to further show their pain and hurt that they experienced in and out of the game of baseball. The detail on the various uniforms makes the reader feel as though they are witnesses a piece of history. The blending and different shades of the stadium pictures make you see a hot sunny day with a stadium full of fans. The text in the book is more advanced than many of the other picture books. As a non-fiction picture book, the information presented in text is a huge part of the story. The headings of each section provide the reader an opportunity for an introduction to the information coming and also gives a small time line for the reader. Also, the text under the headings is often times a famous quote that will also provide more literature information and higher levels of thinking. The appeal for this book varies greatly on the reader. For sports lovers, this book is a huge deal in not only the African American sense, but also for sports in general. For young athletes, it would be important to read about and understand the great amount of pain and work that many people put into making the sport what it is today. I do believe that this is a very effective story. Unlike many non-fiction book, this story really puts you into the stadium and makes you feel connected to the fictional person in the story.
Content Connections: Language Arts and Social Studies
How To Use In The Classroom: I would use this as an introduction to a social studies lesson. I think a lot of children would connect with the sports aspect and all of the termoil that was going on at this particular time in history."
"I love baseball. It brings back not just the joy from my childhood playing the game but how my father and I quietly and intently watched anything related to baseball. This book reminded me one day of when the classic homerun derby was on television and my dad said, "Put it on." On the show, Jackie Robinson challenged Ted Williams. By dad said, " Son, you're about to watch the masters." I was hooked. In the end, Jackie Robinson won. He was mad. At first, I was confused. My father was no racist. I asked and he said those darn Dodgers always win. I later found out that my father was a Ted Williams fan and thought that the Red Sox were the team to follow. I have been a fan of them my whole life. Prior to reading this book, I knew little of the Negro League. All I really knew was that it essentially went bust when Robinson entered the majors and that the players played out of love and not money (neither did whites but today its all about money). I feel that history needs to be told and retold so that parts of our culture not only are remembered but honored. That is what this book does and I am proud to be able to say read this book."
