About this title: In arresting prose and illuminated with Shreve's breathtaking photography, "The Daily Coyote" is at once Shreve's month-by-month exploration of her coyote pup's first year and a meditation on the nature of wildness versus domestication, and of love in all its forms.

"Shreve Stockton's book, which followed her "Daily Coyote" blog, tells the story of how she came to raise Charlie, an orphaned coyote her boyfriend brought home to her. She describes the difficult of raising a hated wild animal, including her fear for his safety (for in Wyoming, coyotes are the enemy), and her challenges with remaining the Alpha in their little pack.
I wanted to love this book, I really did. It's the wanting that made me give it three stars. Well, that and the photos. Stockton includes lovely photos of Charlie that she's taken herself, and I found myself looking forward to seeing each one. But the writing is unremarkable, and the book is frequently boring, particularly when she describes her relationship with her boyfriend, an agent for the Department of Natural Resources (I believe; it's been awhile), who shoots coyotes for a living. He was taciturn, mostly shut off, in large part due to the loss of a daughter due to an accident. This part of his story, no doubt, is very sad, but Stockton lacks the writing skills to truly communicate his loss, making him difficult to understand. She would have been better off leaving that part out and focusing on her relationship with Charlie.
Would I recommend this book? Not as a purchase. Check it out from the library if you're curious. Or just go online and look for her blog, where you'll get to see some great photos of Charlie. That's the best part of the book, anyway."
"I really would like to see what happens if the author writes the book again, now. It is painfully obvious that she is writing it under a deadline...which she discusses in the book. She is also writing it *as* its happening...not in the form of a memoir or diary, but as a non-fiction account.
She seems to be a decent writer, and what she has done is compelling. I envy her her chutzpah and sensitivity. I did enjoy the book, but as I said previously, I feel that it needed the benefit of time and reflection - but The Daily Coyote was a hit, and the market may not have waited."
"I loved this book. I have two dogs and three cats and I can see what Ms. Stockton would have to go through to get her coyote to behave. This loving story made me crave for more of Charlie and his friends, I'm giving your book, Ms. Stockton, five stars for your excellent work!
I loved the fabulous pictures and Charlie's sweet attitude of forgiveness and love. Though he does get sick in the book, he does not die, which is excellent! Versus most books of wild animals living with people or a person, this book was the most exciting book I've read. It kept me on my toes and ready for each fun on each and every page."
"I enjoyed reading this one. I doubt that I would have made many of the same decisions that Ms. Stockton made. I could never live my life as she's lived hers. She does express some things that are worth thinking about. Ultimately, though I guess I just sort of think she's devoted more of her life to an animal than another human being; rather than choose to have both people and animals in her life, it seems to be that she's mostly eliminated the people in favor of the animals. In my mind creating a life a bit less fulfilling than it could be.
Still, an interesting tale. Somehow I want to re-visit things in the future to see how it all plays out, without having to follow her blog.
I do so wish Good Reads would enable us to use 1/2 stars in our ratings, this one might have earned 2 1/2 rather than 3.
Some of my favorite things in the book were phrases that were spoken by Mike. I kind of wish I knew the end of that story as well."
