About this title: This graphic novel collects the fifth major story arc of the SANDMAN series, issues #32 through #37. Barbie, a minor character from THE DOLL'S HOUSE story arc, takes center stage in this exploration of personal and gender identity. Despite her looks, her name, and her ex-husband named Ken, Barbie is no dumb blonde. "Maybe it's because I read this after I almost finished the series (I had to wait for it to be sent to my library) or maybe this one was even more "out there" than the others that I felt this volume did not fit in as well in the overall series. The story was good and Morpheus did show up a few times to make sure things were returned to the way they should be, but the whole cast of characters in the dream-land and in the "real world" almost felt like they belonged to another story. A second reading probably will make it flow better (for me) within the Sandman saga. As always with Gaiman, the story was very imaginative and almost everything tied in together at the end."
"While I missed the inclusion of the Endless family from most of the book, I was impressed that a Sandman book could keep my attention without them. Wanda was such a great character to keep me intrigued throughout the story. The art was fantastic and really helped create and push the story. I commend Shawn McManus for his art in specifically "Slaughter on Fifth Avenue" and "I Woke Up and One of Us Was Crying." George became more and more gruesome, both as a character and through the art, and was quite an compelling character. Some of the panels will stick in my mind for a long time."
"Okay, I know I said I was going to take a break from graphic novels, but, y'know, they had this at the library, and, y'know, I ended up staying up late reading it all at once.
I think this was one of my more favorite in the anthology series in the plot department. This book definitely had its entire narrative fully encapsulated. I also thoroughly enjoyed the scenery drawn in The Land. Beautiful cross-hatching and lightly colored skies. I wanted to jump into the page and live in The Land, which is interesting because in the story it was a dimension in the dream world created by a young Victorian girl and currently inhabited in dreams by a woman who fancies herself a princess."
"A Game of You, the 5th volume in the Sandman series, is my favorite so far. One thing I've noticed Gaiman is very good at is picking up little threads he dropped in previous stories and building on them (this was one of my favorite things about Buffy; there's nothing more rewarding for a viewer/reader than a story that doesn't forget its past). The most noteable one that gets picked up in this volume is the main character, Barbie, who was a minor character in The Doll's House. In that volume, we were introduced to her dream world very briefly, and I was surprised (and pleased) to see it turned into something bigger and darker.
I've also noticed by this point that the story doesn't suffer when Morpheus takes a back seat to the action. Gaiman is skilled enough to provide a compelling cast instead of just relying on one strong character with an entourage of half-developed sidekicks."
