About this title: This graphic novel collects the third story arc in the SANDMAN series, issues #17-#20. Rather than being one continuous narrative, it is a set of tales exploring variations on the same theme: Ideas are both important and extremely powerful; in fact, if they're strong enough, they can do more than merely change one's perception of reality--they can ...

"Two confessions. One, I read a good chunk of this while having insomnia this morning. (The irony is not lost on me.) Two, I skimmed through the script at the end. (As mildly interesting as it was, after having read the comic itself, I wasn't about to read it again in script form.)
So far, this is my favorite in the series. I like the lettering in the contents page, and the Midsummer Night comic is good. The highlight for me of course is the piece about the uprising of the cats. In olden times, cats roamed the earth as large predators to humans, and modern domesticated cats are now uniting to rise above the shadows of what they once were, by dreaming."
"This one is a collection of short stories, rather than an arc. The story about Calliope, the imprisoned muse was very poignent. Hoping to learn more about Dreams dead son. I liked all the different crazy ideas that swarmed Madoc. The second story, about the dreams of 1000 cats, was very inventive. Really like the end, where the 'cute little kitten' was dreaming of hunting men. The third story revealed the bargain that Dream made with Shakespeare and a special performance of Midsummer's nights dream. The last story concerns Raine, a woman with metamorphic powers who longs to die because she is so different, but can't because of her abilities. I liked all the old faces littering her apartment, and her exchange with Death. She's a fun character."
"Earlier, when I reviewed The Facts in the Case of the Departure of Miss Finch, I said that I wished more of Gaiman's short stories could be adapted in graphic novel form. Dream Country fills that wish a bit; rather than being part of the storyline started in the first two Sandman volumes, this compilation contains four single-issue stories. All four stories demonstrated once again that Gaiman is a master of the short story, and even though I'm not a cat person, I was very fond of the dreaming kitties."
"3.5 stars for this, what is essentially a short story collection. Extra half star for the general darkitude, which mostly worked well, and general solidness. The "Midsummer Night's Dream" story is apparently one of the famous well-regarded Sandman stories, but it actually was my least favorite. First prize goes to the kitty cats. Maybe that's lame, but they were beautiful, and, KITTY CATS.
This edition includes a script, for "Calliope," so I read the script too because I like scripts. I've always particularly been intrigued by comic scripts, somewhat because it's the least familiar form, but I think I put my finger on it while reading this one. Occasionally, my favorite part of a play is its stage directions. And in a way, a comic script is 75% "stage" directions. And Gaiman's are helpful, suggestive stage directions. I like reading these, I think, because the directions are a method for sharing the story on a different plane than what is evoked by the final work. I will always like that."
