"I wasn't expecting too much from this book. Though it took some re-reading of certain paragraphs to understand what was going on, it was worth it. Not the conclusion many people would be satisfied with, but I was. This novel contains some mature subject matter, so I would suggest it to readers that are at least sixteen years old. The first half of the story is about the events leading up to the death of Santiago Nasar. Then the love between Angela and the husband who left her is described after Nasar's death, and then we learn just how Angela's twin brothers killed Nasar. I know, the order is confusing, but you must read the book to truly understand. Throughout the story, the reader is lead to question whether Nasar really did take Angela's virginity (the reason why her husband left her and her brothers wanted to kill Nasar), but we never find out. Many questions are left unanswered, but it is a worthwhile novel, nonetheless."
"I don't think the translation was as good as it could have been, but I could perceive some of the language even so, and I can't wait to actually read it in Spanish and understand it. This book is surreal and Marquez really triumphs with the style of magical realism in more than just the obvious ways. Even in his portrayal of human beings he uses magical realism, often interweaving it with cultural sensibilities, social mentality. It's so much more than just about the murder of Santiago Nasar. I especially like how the female characters, though perhaps not as fully delved into as they could have been, are still believable and not at all shallow. Angela Vicario is a heroine and the narrator remains a shady character right up to the end. The detached tone of the narrator makes the book read like a report in some ways, and I think that was what made me dislike the book at first. As well as the translation not being that great. But I now really love this book. There are parts of it I could read again and again forever."
"Sometimes I feel like I'm the only book-lover who hates most of the books she reads. I don't mean to; I always go in hoping for the best. But for whatever reason, most books aren't what I was looking for.
Same goes for this book. I'd heard great things about Marquez, and was curious about "magical realism." And this book certainly had a compelling opening line. But ultimately, it felt like "Rashomon" with less-defined characters and a less-defined point. I enjoyed the description of the place, but the people felt interchangeable and unrealistic in their motivations.
Perhaps this was a translation problem, but certain words and descriptions became repetitive. Adolescents were always described as being "in bloom" and any scene with Nassar would end with "that was the last time s/he saw him." The first instance was interesting and compelling, but it quickly became annoying.
I didn't see much in terms of "magical realism," unless a belief in fate counts as magic.
I'm disappointed that I didn't enjoy Marquez more. I was looking forward to reading Love in the Time of Cholera, and now I'm put off the whole idea. Ah well. One can't enjoy everything. Especially in my case."
"I think that the title of this book tells it all because once I read the title I knew exactly what the book was going to be about. What was really interesting was that you basically know what the whole story is about in the first 20 pages. This book is basically a flashback. In the beginning of the book it tells you what happened which is that Santiago Nasar got killed by the Vicario twins. Then as the book goes on, it talks about the morning of the day that he got killed. I liked this book because it explains every little detail of that day. It is like the narrator following Santiago everywhere he went that day. I am surprise that the whole town knew that the Vicario brothers were going to kill him but did nothing to stop them. It is also interesting that the Vicario twins was talking about how they were going to kill Santiago in public but everyone who heard them thought that they wouldn't actually kill him. It is also ironic to me when Santiago tried to get inside his home but his mother thought that it was the Vicario twins coming to kill Santiago so she closed the door and didn't let him in which ultimately allow the twins to kill Santiago."
