"As I'm currently getting to know the Albanian culture, I decided to read for this author. He's the Albanian Naguib Mahfouz. I chose this book as my first as he talks of his own chilhood in Gjirokaster. I liked it so far, sometimes it was a bit too slow, but all in all it was entertaining."
"Coming-of-age stories are perhaps my favorite of all stories, and this one had a lot to offer. There are many beautiful, though sometimes gruesome, descriptions. It is a story about an ordinary life continuing though and growing up beause of war, violence, and civil unrest. The story is translated from Albanian. I am sure I would have enjoyed the book more if I were familiar with the literature, history, and culture of the Balkans."
