"Technology, we can't live with it and we can't live without it. In our modern world, it unlocks our cars and runs the economy of the world. Thousands upon thousands of computers communicate with each other through the World Wide Web. Autonomous programs called "daemons' make our interconnected lives possible. While most daemons are benign; their designers might not be so amenable. Matthew Sobol designed the world's two most popular MMPOGs (massive multi-player online game), Over the Rhine and The Cult. When he dies of brain cancer, his obituary triggers a dormant daemon, an event that will kill federal agents and completely unravel the economic underpinnings of our society. Can society live in a world with no technology or can we come to terms with a world driven by technology over which we have no control? Do we really control our own lives or are we just cogs in our computers' drive to take over the world? This is a challenging book to read with plenty of apocalyptic warnings about the very nature of technology. The ending feels rather rushed. After 416 pages of adrenaline packed reading, it is not so neatly wrapped up in 13 pages. Nonetheless, read it at your own peril."
"I really enjoyed this book. At the very beginning of the book, I felt like some of the characterization was a little forced, or possibly just done in too calculating a method. However, that's only within the first few chapters, and after that the individual voices of the characters were clear enough that I forgave the earlier issues.
The plot is tense and moves forward at a quick pace, as any great thriller should. The ideas behind this story are both fascinating and terrifying, the latter because the technology described in the book currently exists. In fact, the technology is so current, I almost hesitate the place the label science fiction on it.
My only real issue with the book is the abruptness of the ending, which does not resolve nearly enough of the sub-plots. Apparently, there is a sequel being released next year, titled Freedom TM, which explains why so many parts of the story are left unresolved. I've read that this book was originally at least twice as long, but he was asked to split it into two books for publishing, which makes sense, and is the only reason that I'm taking off one star.
This is an excellent read, and helps to shed light on just how vulnerable we have made our society by using homogeneous and centralized networks."
"Really good book about what someone could do if they had amazing control of the internet, a lot of free time and lots of money
Matthew Sobol, the best game designer in the world, has died. With his death, a stunning series of events begins to take place, starting with the deaths of a few programmers, and extending to the endangering of the entire world. Very few people can hope to stop his plan.
The story is incredibly fast. There are no slow parts. There is lots of plot, lots of detail and many characters. It's similar to a Michael Crichton novel except better. More accurate stories, more realistic, more detailed, more interesting characters.
The book is a cross between The Stand and The Matrix, two of the epics of our time. Like The Matrix, technology plays a central role in this story, and like the former, it about what happens to the people who are trying to cope with the world changing all around them.
This is not a masterful piece of literature. It's book candy and really tasty."
"Wonderful, wonderful read. I'm taking off one star because I found the ending to be very... well, not to my liking. I thought it was too abrupt, and I didn't feel like anything was resolved. Maybe it was supposed to be, but I tend to like closure."
