About this title: Named for the mountain in Turkey where Noah's ark is said to reside, this collection of poems draws on Greek myth and Old Testament narrative to describe the modern family of the author. The emotional straining of her mother and father, the loss of a sibling, and the complexity of sentiment toward her son are resonant here with archetypal familiarity and power.

"If this were another poet, I would be more impressed. But Gluck ups her own ante, through such works as "The Wild Iris" and "Averno." This collection hit harder than "The Seven Ages," but, ultimately, lacked the complexity and ingenuity of her later work. Despite its many reversals--for example, the mother being divided instead of the baby in her re-writing of the King Solomon tale--this collection felt too straightforward. The epigraph from Plato on the origins of love greatly enhanced the collection, coloring the source of the "wound." And also speaks to the doubling within the family; family member's becoming echoes of each other, becoming, essentially, lost halves; so that Gluck can masterfully shift between how her mother treated her and her own treatment of her son in "Brown Circle," how her father feels about her and she about her father in "First Memory." Still, as a whole and as individual poems, "Ararat" does not quite compare to Gluck's later works."
"Very autobiographical, about her family, often about the deaths of her sister and father.
As with "Descending Figure," I enjoyed the spareness of the language in the book, as well as some interesting metaphors: her framing of new widows and new orphans as being "born" into a different life was a thought-provoking treatment of birth and death; her metaphor that her dead sister's buried body is a magnet for her mother's heart was stunning; and her complicated image of a magnifying glass and a flower as a metaphor for parental love was gorgeous and honest. I was also pleased to see a sense of humor in this book (in "Animals," when she describes the more primitive elements of a sibling relationship).
However, I thought the melodramatic and morbid tendency was much more pronounced here .C'mon--does she really want to kill her sister's young daughter? Is it really "always a relief to bury an adult" (opposed to children, I suppose?)
"so, it took me forever to find this volume, and i was shocked to discover i don't like it as much as i thought i would. or,at least, i don't love all of it as much as i LOVE the last poem (First Memory), which has been a longtime favorite. it's just not as sophisticated as her later works. but maybe nothing's ever that sophisticated when we are examining our childhoods, relationships with parents and siblings and so on. it's very accessible compared to some of her other books, and it's still good; but it doesn't have the sharp tongue, the wit, and self-awareness i love about LG most of all."
