"I read this out loud to my 6 year old daughter. Every evening I was as excited to get back to it as she was. We didn't realize this was #3 until a little way in. However, the author does a very good job of "reminding" the reader of past events, so we weren't lost in the story at all. If we had read the first 2, I might have liked this book more. All in all, a really entertaining story"
"May Bird is a bit of a reluctant hero, but if she believes in herself, or has to find a friend she will risk her life and fight to the end as we found out in the first two books. This book was no different. At first May struggles with the destiny laid out for her by the Book of the Dead, but as her adventure continues she raises to the challenges...but then everything comes crashing down when she learns that the Book of the Dead isn't always right. Sometimes it's completely wrong... I liked the book, which dealt with a lot of the same issues as the first two. One thing that put me off a little is that unlike the first two books, where virtually no time passed in between the action, three years pass before this book picks up again. Once into the book though I understood why the author let that time pass, so a bit off putting at first don't let that keep you from reading the entire series. The only other thing I thought was a bit strange was the feeling near the end of the book that everyone had to be matched up...even the cat. I'm not a huge fan of books where every character has to find their love at the end of the book in order to provide the ending. Diana Wynne Jones is also a big fan of this ...thing. Although she remains my absolute favorite YA author I do sometimes roll my eyes at the end of her stories where everyone ends up getting married, etc. I've also noticed that in many of these YA stories (especially ones aimed at young girls), any character that does not at least have a crush on a suitable young person (always heterosexual of course) is most likely either completely evil or at least an old grumpy man/woman. Because if you don't fall in love when you're young well...then you'll probably end up a bitter dried up hag. I look forward to it!"
