"A younger son, Halli Sveinsson rebels against his parents' and village's expectations through a series of endless (mostly harmless) pranks and escapades. But when his beloved uncle is murdered by a rival house, Halli sets out to avenge his uncle, a quest that will have startling repercussions for all of the residents of the valley.
I love Jonathan Stroud's books. He's the king of the snark, and he doesn't disappoint in this one. Halli has turned insult into an art. The dialogue brought tears of laughter to my eyes. The medieval, vaguely Scandinavian setting is also incredibly detailed.
I love the narrative structure here, of stories within stories. Each chapter is prefaced with a story of past heroes of the valley, their epic deeds and misadventures loosely foretelling what's to come. I also love the continual setup of cliffhangers that resolve themselves to be anything but--Stroud has mingled suspense and comedic timing beautifully.
There's also a true element of horror winding throughout the book. Halli's people and those of neighboring villages have long confined themselves to their valley, safe behind rock walls and cairns, for fear of the man-eating Trows that roam the mountainsides. Halli and his friend Aud(a spunky and appealing heroine) doubt the stories--no one, after all, has ever SEEN a Trow and lived to tell the tale. Surely they're only stories...or are they? Stroud leaves you guessing 'til the end. The two's attempts to push the boundaries of their peoples' beliefs, to break with tradition, and to find a place for themselves could lead ultimately to bloody death by tooth and claw.
I'm hoping this may be the start of a series--while it's utterly complete within itself, there's room to expand on Halli's story and what lies beyond the valley.
A coming of age story. An epic fantasy adventure. For any fans of Eragon, or Ranger's Apprentice, or even Sea of Trolls this one's a must-read."
"I really like this author. He tells a great story. In this book, the characters are real and appealing. But most of all, he surprises me. This book is set in Viking time--medieval and somewhat primitive. The protagonist is the second son of the House, not tall, not handsome, not good at almost anything but pranks and contrariness. But his underlying dream of being a hero like the ones in the tales leads him toward growth, even when it also leads him toward folly. I loved the author's use of myth and legend to link the characters, plot and theme. Above all, the ending knocked my socks off. It's a very satisfying read. Like other Stroud titles, the writing is superb."

"I read Hero's of the Valley in an, "Okay, seen him before. I'll try it," kind of mode. It took me a long time to get into it but once I did get into the lengthy tale I didn't really put it down until the middle of the end, which should be the part were your drooling over the pages in antisipation. The ending was horrible! As for the plot, I liked it. A boy longs for adventure in heroism. When his uncle is murdered, it seems like the perfecect oportunity to prove himself a hero like his great ancesstor. But things begin to fall apart. With the asistance of a girl from another house, he makes wars, and builds friendships along with enemies. But most of all Hally explores what it really means to be a hero. It had good solid characters, but I didn't find Hally all that apealing and I was kind of rooting for a romance between him and his friends. Don't get your hopes up. I didn't really like her either. I didn't get all to atatched. At the beginning of the book it talked about how witty Hally was but I fealt cheated when Hally made these increadibly untactful and stupid choices. His stupid actions seemed to be put there to push the plot along. The book didn't flow as well because of this. Stroud spent a lot of time on things I didn't really care about. I fealt he could have made the book a bit shorter and therefore more enjoyable. The setting was good, a viking like society. It was earthy and gritty just the way I like it. The creatures and well... I can't say for fear of giving away the ending, just seemed really ludicrous and unrealalistic. I did like some of the tension that came as a result of them, but I ddin't like them. This is a book I havy very mixed fealings about. I wouldn't really recomend it. The ending is upscure and just flat out weird and disapointing. Plus it's a cliffhanger and I really can't take the week of stress, thinking about what happened to our characters and places, especially if there isn't a sequel."
