"At Grave's End is the third in the Night Huntress series, and I have to say that I really enjoyed it.
The books jumps right into the action within the first chapter, with Cat and her team trying to do their usual round-up of bad vampires. However, there is a snag. With Cats growing reputation it is getting harder and harder for her to play bait, even in disguise vampire's tend to get tipped off to her being the Reaper by her perfect skin.
To top it all off people are not taking Bones as a threat seriously, and that includes Cat's father Max. Max wants Cat dead, not liking that he is being blamed for the reaper's existence. He uses Cats mother to trick her into coming alone to a ambush. There he tortures her in front of here mother, almost killing her in the process. However Bones ends up rescuing Cat and her mother. Then proceeds to publicly torture Max as a way to prove what would happen to anybody that attacks his wife.
But there is one other vampire who is trying to kill Cat, and that is Patra. The two thousand year old daughter of Cleopatra, and wife to Mencheres. Seeing the inevitability to this, Mencheres seeks to create an alliance between his and Bones line.
During the ceremony Bones and Mencheres exchange blood to make the alliance official, and as a result Bones becomes more powerful. He can now read any human mind, and has the ability to appear dead in order to fool his enemies. That ability ends up saving his life when he gets stabbed in the heart and thrown of a bridge.
But Cat doesn't know of this new ability until after she hears that he is dead. This causes her great pain, and even has her considering suicide. Until, Vlad(a.k.a Dracula) convinces her to get even with the people that had a hand in Bones death.
And that's what she does for the next couple days, even is named head of the line in Bones' absence.
When Bones is finally well enough he finds Cat, and she cannot believe that he is alive. She and every person in his line are over-joyed that he is alive, and cannot wait to get on with attacking Patra.
While they are waiting though Patra has other plans, and sends an army of zombies to them. This causes Mencheres to realize that Patra will never stop in her quest to make him and every one he loves unhappy. So he raises wraith, and sends them to find and torture the person that murdered them.
The wraith fly out, and the vampires follow them straight to Patra. Where Bones eventually puts a knife through her heart, and kills her.
Overall I loved it, there were even a couple of times where I couldn't help but laugh. Especially when Cat's mom is caught with a ghoul."
"I didn't buy this book new & I'm glad. The first book showed a lot of promise, the second book didn't live up to even that forlorn hope & this book circled the drain. I don't think she can salvage this series now. I think 2 stars is generous.
She has a neat premise, a new take on vampires, ghouls & such. Unfortunately, her writing has gone downhill along with her plot, characterization & overall theme.
There was no doubt about how the story would play out. Her characters are too powerful - more powerful than the world around them. If someone jumps from the third floor down to a residential first floor, they're going to at least damage the floor, if not go through. Just one of many examples of poorly fitting the 'real' world into this fictional one. The good guys always had things their way & were too powerful to worry about much.
I felt the book was rushed. Poor writing; sentence structure, dialogue & more, were all through out. The 'excitement' fell flat, was overdone & underdone, depending on the jerky flow."
"Catherine "Cat" Crawfield a long-time vampire hunter, half-vampire, half-human is the head of an elite team of a government agency, who deals with paranormal law enforcements. But her career may be over now every undead creature knows her appearance, red hair and green eyes. When Cat's cover is blown again, the team needs to find another way to deal with the undead. So they ask a rogue prisoner to assist in their operation, she agrees but takes the first opportunity to escape and kills one of the team members along the way.
But that is not all Cat worries about because a killer vampire from Bones' past re-appears with only one thing on her mind.... vengeance. Patra is determined to kill Bones once and for all and to do that she unleashes a powerful evil. Cat and Bones has to join forces with not only the elite team, but also Bones's grand sire and some powerful vampires form the past to fight this evil.
At grave's end by Jeaniene Frost is the third novel in The Night huntress series and another fabulous one. This is a story that will lure you into a world full of danger, companionship and true love. So I was not surprise to find myself finishing the book hours later.
The main characters Cat and Bones are both strong and determined to succeed in their mission. Their relationship is hot, sensual, strong and full of danger, but that is just the way they like it. Totally committed to each together Bones has to deal with his jealousy, when one of the team members Tate shows his affection more to Cat. Tate even turns into a vampire in the hope Cat will leave Bones for him. But readers who has read this series, knows that will never happen.
I was hooked from the first page and couldn't put the book down, so it's only natural that I finish it hours later. I think every woman will fall in love with Bones.... at least I am. . Jeaniene Frost really knows how to write a fabulous vampire novel. I cannot wait to find out, what she has in store in the next novel."
"Cat Crawfield should be having the time of her life. She is finally with her love Bones, has the job of her dreams, and is surrounded by a wonderful group of friends and family. But the undead are catching onto them and know that the Red Reaper is working under different disguises. Not only are the undead catching on, but a woman from Bones's past wants her out of the picture. Will Cat and Bones be able to work together seamlessly, or will their strong personalities rip them apart? Can Cat put aside her human instinct, that which will not help her in the world of the dead and undead, and put all her trust in her vampiric nature?
The Grave Series is definitely one of my favorite new series to come out, but I still felt like this story fell short of the previous two books. The plot seemed over-worked, and there was just too much going on in the story to make it enjoyable. Trying to keep track of the many character additions didn't help in this either. There were some really fantastic characters and background added to the story though, so it wasn't all bad. Instead of it being a fast paced read that I couldn't put down, I felt myself struggling to make it through the book. I love Cat and Bones, and the world Frost has created, but some of the plot was pointless and I wasn't falling for what was given to me.
One of the better parts of the story is some surprises via Cat's mom. As well as a surprise character that is very ancient and very likeable in my opinion.
Overall, the story was ok. I wasn't thrilled, and am hoping that Book 4 will have the kinks that showed up Book 3 worked out. If you were already a fan of the first two books, I don't think you should pass up on this story. I just wouldn't rush out right away and get it if there are others on your list.
I would like to say that the cover and inside page is absolutely STUNNING.
To sum things up: Didn't love it, didn't hate it."
