"Okay, not sure I am going to get past her writing style of tell me, instead of show me. This is a basic novice writing flaw. She needs a new editor. I read family tree by this author also. I find she addresses interesting topics, but because of major flaws in writing style and facts (ie. two whites cannot have a dark baby that is the result of a dark person in the wood pile, this would be the result of mutation, not inheritance) I am not sure I will spend the time to complete this novel. She addresses very interesting relationship issues in her work, so I may trudge forward despite categorizing her work as pulp fiction on all other fronts.
Just as I expected. The saving grace is that she does not get too, too mushy during parts that can easily be over done."
"I wasn't in the right mood to read this so I just skimmed it. Two grown sisters have always been competitive and very different from each other. The more ostensibly outgoing of the two has a medical accident and falls into a coma. The other is left with caretaking, guilt, and other emotional baggage dealing with her own emotions, her parents, their friends, etc. The book plumbs the depths of the way a family deals with a loved one in a long-term coma, the turmoil of emotions when relationships are troubled, the way to healing, etc. Delinksy does a pretty good job of making these characters real, but it's a heavy subject and I couldn't bring myself to spend much time on it."
"This book was really good, but very sad at the same time. It's about a young woman who suffers a massive heart attack while training for a marathon. She is in a coma and is declared brain dead, so her family must decide to keep her on life support or to let her die. The book is pretty much about the woman's family and the struggles that they have to face while making the decision. Her sister was very close to her, but feels guilty because she was supposed to be there with her during the run and wasn't. At the end of the book, everyone makes peace with what happened and is able to move on. There were quite a few parts that I cried at, because that must be the most unimaginable pain to have to deal with. I would recommend this book to people, but beware that it is a little sad."
"While My Sister Sleeps is the story of two sisters. One is an elite marathoner, training for the Olympics. The other works in the family business and lives in her sister's shadow. That is, until the marathoner suffers a massive heart attack and is left with brain damage from the lack of oxygen. Then the family must decide what to do next.
The writing was fairly weak.
But, I do like a book that makes me think about issues. This book made me think about....
-end-of-life care... what do I want my family to do if I'm brain dead? Keep me around in a vegetative state? Pull the plug?
-sharing medical information with family. Do you owe it to your family to pass on the medical issues that you're dealing with? Yes, I do believe so. Then they can help you and they can be on the lookout for these issues occurring in their own lives.
