About this title: In eight unusual stories, David Benioff expertly takes his characters through life-changing events that quietly reveal them for who they are: a hot young singer is persuaded to sell out, a young man mourns the death of his beloved, an actress tries to deal with rejection.

"Okay this boy is some sort of genius wunderkind. First I read his last novel, one of my favorirte books of the year, City of Thieves. I'm still waiting for his first novel from the library so in the meantime I picked up this collection of short stories. Oh my. He captures people in such a real way. (By contrast, I had to put down Pat Conroy's latest because nothing about it felt genuine to me. And Pat Conroy is considered one of the greatest living writers.) The last story in the collection is a real doozy. When I was done I felt like my seat had fallen out of the bottom of an airplane."
"I read this book because I enjoyed the book "City of Thieves" which was a surprise and delight that I fell into this summer. I enjoyed this collection of short stories, some more that others, as would be expected. The story "The Devil Comes to Orekovo" and "Neversink" were particularly good. At times the stories did have a touch of " I'm-getting-my-Master's-in-creative-writing" feel to them, as if they were the favored tale on a given assignment. If you read Benioff's novels, give this collection a try. I have a feeling this guy will be a solid story teller with many more novels in his future and you can say you read him in his early days."
"A solid collection of stories by an author who is adept at creating a wide variety of characters and finding those moments of revelation in their lives."
