About this title: Sir Alec Guinness, one of the most outstanding and beloved actors of his generation, shares an 18-month diary of his present life. Guinness frankly says of this diary, which covers the period from New Year's Day 1995 to June 1996: "I have been unable to disguise my phobias, irritations, prejudices . . . childishness and frivolity. Sometimes, I ...

"Very repetitive, even though I acknowledge it's diary style. "we gave lunch to...", "We gave dinner to..."
Perhaps the generation gap plays a part here, but Alec Guinness comes across as a curmudgeonly man. One from the old school definitely.
Personally I saw very little insight into his life, although it became very clear that getting old is unremittingly bad.
I knew he wasn't a fan of his Star Wars work, but his bitterness about fans surprised me. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you!
There were one or two touching moments when real life impinged upon his lifestyle: the down and out who managed to pry a £1 out of him, and his reaction to people helping him when he fell on the street one day.
I'm left wondering what actually happened about his dodgy eye..."
"A diary - a year and a half long 1995 to halfway through 1996... As I suspected, old age has nothing to commend it and this book simply proves it. Too much name dropping and too much repetition. One or two funnies and that's it so far."
"I recently re-read this book (we had bought and read it first about ten years ago.) It is so delightful! Alec Guinness has a light touch in this year and a half journal of his daily life in 1995-1996. There are reminiscences, details of lunches and dinners, flowers and trees in his garden, adventures with dogs and birds. I absolutely love this book and the one he wrote subsequently, "Absolutely Final Performance" (I think the title is -- it's in the next room on the bed and I'm reading it now). I remembered a few things from the first reading, but mostly it is all new and wonderful!"
