John L. Austin" was one of the leading philosophers of the twentieth century. The William James Lectures presented Austin's conclusions in the field to which he directed his main efforts on a wide variety of philosophical problems. These talks became the classic "How to Do Things with Words."
For this second edition, the editors have returned to Austin's original lecture notes, amending the printed text where it seemed necessary. Students will find the new text clearer, and, at the same time, more faithful to the actual lectures. An appendix contains literal transcriptions of a number ...

"Speech is an act, and it implies further action of some kind - it is never merely descriptive. After reading this book, the "I'm just sayin'!" plea starts to sound utterly lame, no matter where it's coming from."
"I wrote my dissertation on Austin. I have a special place in my heart for this linguist. He taught me how to craft language (definitely prepared me for my profession!)"
"One of my favorite works of criticism, this is the book that launched speech-act theory, which others would develop into performative theory. Austin limits himself to the idea of the performative utterance, but others like Judith Butler have taken this theory and expanded it. Butler uses it mainly to discuss how we "perform" a gender, for instance. I really like how at the end Austin disproves his own theories, essentially making the point of the book null and void. Brilliant, I think, although this trick severely upsets some readers."
