"Awhile ago, I took a trip to the bookstore just for fun, and found a ton of books in the general cooking section that we just *needed* to have at work for the culinary program. So being the dork I am, I started a list of them all in my tiny carry-all notebook, of which this was a title. Guiltily, my husband found me half an hour later, reproaching "Are you doing *work*?" Yes, of course, because I'm a complete dork. So finally, this book came in from Baker & Taylor, so I just got to read it. I thought if the culinary students ever had the time (ha! it doesn't seem like any culinary students *ever* have leisure time), then this might be a good sympathetic book to read for them. I know that I personally would have loved to read novels about people in grad school and working while I was in grad school and working (again, if I'd had the time, which I in actuality *did*, as I was merely busy procrastinating the writing of papers). Much like and almost indistinguishable from another book I got us from the same bookstore trip, Under the Table, this is an enjoyable snapshot of culinary student life. Personally, it helped me understand a little bit better the culinary students, chefs, and the curriculum (even though it isn't our specific curriculum, of course, being Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and not the Art Institute in Atlanta, GA). Replete with recipes that are far too intimidating for me to try."
"The author writes an account of her stint as a student at Le Cordon Bleu culinary school in Paris, where she took the Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced courses. For those interested in cooking, Le Cordon Bleu, food, or Paris, this is an entertaining read. The author's writing style is more on the pedestrian side of journalism, but it gets the job done and she imparts a real flavor (...) of what the school and Le Cordon Bleu curriculum are like. There's also the part where she depleted her life savings so that she could drop everything (well, she was dropped via a job layoff) and live in Paris for a year - this is where it helps to be child-less and not tied down - along with the man who also dropped everything (in Seattle) and came to live with her in Paris (they marry during the course of the book), all of which is a nice vicarious experience for the reader. The author includes recipes at the end of each chapter, most from her Le Cordon Bleu training and most of which I'd never make, but they, too, make for interesting reading if one likes to read cookbooks (which I do)."
"I never would have thought I'd enjoy a book about food and learning to cook at Le Cordon Bleu cooking school in Paris..... I pulled it at the last minute from the library shelf in case I couldn't deal with the heaviness of my other choice.... Well, I have yet to get to the heavier piece but listened instead to this one. I found this one kept my interest, even though I am not a food person.... I 'Eat To Live'. I do not 'Live To Eat'. I don't particularly like cooking or food unless someone sets a nice prepared plate in front of me.... but I can be tempted some times. Generally, I don't give a damn what's in the fridge or on the shelf in the pantry.... eating for me is a chore more than anything else. So... well this book did not change that, but it was interesting and well written and there were one of two tempting recipes I think my father & I would absolutely love! I am surprised that I enjoyed the book so much and I certainly learned a lot about cooking!"
"things this book has going for it: -takes place at the cordon bleu/involves the best food in the world, setting the stage for amazing mfk fisher-style food descriptions -involves a love story AND paris, so guaranteed to sell -michael ruhlman (writer i had previously enjoyed/trusted) writes a good review on the jacket reasons it still fails horribly: -no character is developed even moderately. its nearly misaogynistic how little information there is about the females...they are all either soooooo beautiful *and* soooooo nice or a total b*tch that everyone hates. after 45 cooking school classmates that are all so awesome and gorgeous i dont care which is which -there is no conflict in the story. apparently, before she even begins cooking school shes an amazing chef. other than struggling to make puff pastry there is no problem, and dont let me get started on the saccharine romance, it is so reliable it might as well be omitted. anyway: the chef de cuisine at a michelin 3 star loves her and wants her to intern when she speaks 3 words, and another chef at the same 3 star claims her thanksgiving puree pile could be served at his restaurant. -everything written on the jacket is false/exaggerated.
i dont know if it was jut not an interesting story in real life or if she failed to make it interesting, but this book was drudgery and has also informed me how to feel about the possibility of picking up eat pray love at any point in the future. if e. gilbert loved this and let her quote be on the cover, shes not for me either."
