"I only have good things to say about this second installment of the NIGHT ANGEL trilogy.
Weeks' horrified, terrified, and made my blood race in the first novel, and he has done no less in this follow-up. Durzo Blint is dead, and Kylar Stern has quit the wetboy life...until Jarl shows up on his doorstep with the news that Logan Gyre is alive.
Kylar makes the decision to save his friend, at the cost of his relationship with Elene, and what follows is a fantasy tale at its best. Weeks has mastered the art of storytelling and investing readers in his characters. He also has the knack for creating edge-of-your-seat suspense. I know I said it when reviewing the first book, but Weeks is one to watch, so keep your eyes open!"
"Brent Weeks not only keeps the tension at killer levels, but he often ratchets them up a notch or three; thankfully he's mastered the art of giving the reader some breathing space. And beware the twists and turns, 'cause you may just find yourself someplace you never expected! Beware, if you begin this book just before bed, you may find yourself VERY short on sleep....
---------
The momentum started so very well in the first book ~ THE WAY OF SHADOWS ~ is accelerating. War is here and now and life in Cenaria is descending to the depths of hell. Kylar so wants to be able to leave his past as a wetboy behind; he wants to marry Elene, start a family and make a home for the woman he loves and the young girl that they've taken into their lives. But it's not to be. I'm constanly amazed at Brent Weeks' ability to take horrifying elements and make them a necessary part of the story. This is very, very much a story of Good versus Evil... and Evil never does things half-way. But watching as various characters find a strength within themselves and others ~ wow... THIS is what makes a story, a series something that will live on for a long time to come. In his Night Angel Trilogy, Brent Weeks has done just that; created a masterpiece that will become a classic. I really can't say enough wonderful things about this book, this series or this author to truly convey my admiration; at least not if I want to keep my review from going on forever."
"It was very good and I enjoyed it for the most part. It loses three stars because there was just way too much preoccupation with sex. Almost every character is either getting raped, turning into a whore, visiting the whore house, is sexually frustrated in some way, or using sex as a tool to achieve something. I'm struggling to think of a major character that doesn't fall in this category. It lost another star because the main character has taken a turn for the worse. He was much more interesting as an assassin in the first book than as the confused mess he is in this book. The nice thing as that near the end of the book things start to change more like the first book. The action comes back, sneaking and killing are back, and there's a little bit less focus on sex. If it didn't get any better, I probably wouldn't bother with the third book. As it is, it will be a while before I pick it up. Overall, this was a terrible let-down after the first book."
"Another book I couldn't put down. This one raises as many questions about the plot as it answers, and some of the plot twists were so surprising they had me groaning with disbelief at the outcome. I really appreciate the symbolism that runs throughout this series about love, morals, inheritance, and following what is in your heart. I was also thrilled to encounter pure poetry in a sci fi work. On page 217 weeks throws out a masterful, beautifully stirring passage: "Kylar just stared at him, uncomprehending. The words collided with each other and shattered on the floor, shards sparkling with the light of truth, but the whole nothing more than splinters and points too sharp to touch." I was stunned and had to pause in my reading to appreciate this little gem. Thanks for that, Brent."
