"I love this series. Eve Dallas is perhaps my all-time favorite fictional character. Why they haven't made a series of movies out of these books I will never know. (Unless they are having the same problem that I have in casting Eve's part.) These books have it all. Romance, mystery, science fiction, thriller - you name it, it's there. Although I usually have a clue as to who the killer is in most mysteries, this time I was clueless, which I really like. Also, these books make you think. In this one, you are forced to think about religion, true faith versus surface faith versus false faith, about appearances, about revenge, about loss, about the different results of early abuse . . . it goes on and on. I could and have re-read most of this series and still find the books remarkable."
"I haven't really figured out why I like these books.
They are stupid, light, quick and all the same. Well, maybe this was a little different. Here, we have an ex-gangsta type who had plastic surgery and masqueraded as a priest for five years while waiting. What was he waiting for?
But, as I said, they are quick reads for the commute or during lunch, etc.
And I would never pick up one of her books under Norah Roberts. This one barely even mentions Roberts, doesn't even mention her books, unless there were written with "J. D. Robb". On some of them, they have said "Norah Roberts writing as J. D. Robb". But not on this one."
"It's amazing--28 books; they've been married for most of them, and yet the sexual tension between Eve and Roark still works! I wish Roberts would teach her secret to TV writers so they would stop putting characters through weird stuff and multiple partners rather than maintain a working relationship with one partner (::coughandysipowitznypdbluecough::).
The plot covers the murders of two men of faith, one a priest, the other a roller who maid it big. There are all kinds of twists and turns for Eve, Peabody, and their allies to follow, to discover why use sacramental wine to kill a beloved priest at a funeral. My only irk is one that has followed me whenever I read the books after a certain point. I hate it that Peabody's squeeze calls her "She-Body." Once or twice it's silly. More than that, it's degrading, and I'm surprised Roberts has let it stand so long.
Apart from that, she's a master storyteller and my husband's favorite writer after (or maybe alongside) Eric Flint. I like her, too. ;-)"
"This series has long been a guilty pleasure for me, but I think it's losing its charm. The idea that Nora Roberts, a wildly successful and incredibly prolific romance novelist, would write a futuristic police procedural was so intriguing I had to pick up a copy, especially after I read in an interview that she's a Buffy fan. Her ideas about the future were often interesting and the banter between Eve Dallas and her sidekick Delia Peabody could be very entertaining, but this time out it all seemed a bit stale. Oh, well."
